105, can you believe it?!

We would like to take a moment to wish our eldest resident a very happy 105th birthday! We are honoured to be able to celebrate this milestone with her. Her sense of humour is like no other.

Some things she has said to us upon wishing her a happy birthday today:
- People don’t live to be that old!
- My birthday? I’ve stopped counting
- People shouldn’t be allowed to be this old
- When advised only the good die young, she advised us that she “was a bad girl”
- Inquired as to if she should have some rye, beer, or wine

And then she tried to nibble my fingers when aiding her with pulling up her mask, which is nearly a daily occurance.

Even at 105, she’s always keeping us on our toes!

It's Nursing Week 2022, and Mount Carmel Home would like to take a moment to thank our fantastic nurses. The care our nurses give our residents is some of the best, and we are so lucky to have them on staff. Thank you nurses!

The COVID-19 Outbreak at Mount Carmel Home is finally over! We are so grateful that no one got extremely sick, and that our residents and staff are recovered and back to their regular day-to-day activities.

As of breakfast this morning, meals are being served in the dining room. The Chapel is open once again and activities have resumed. Residents are able to go on outings and visitors are allowed to come into the Home.

The rules and regulations surrounding COVID-19 in Ontario Retirement Homes were updated a number of times while we were in Outbreak. Residents have received information in relation to social outings, overnight absences, communal dining, activities, and having visitors. Family members on our email list will have received this information as well. Staff would be happy to answer any questions residents or their loved ones may have.

Please feel free to contact Victoria at mountcarmelretirement@outlook.com with any questions regarding the updated covid rules, or to schedule a visit with a loved one.

We look forward to seeing you all again soon!

As some of you might know, Mount Carmel Home has been experiencing a COVID-19 outbreak, which was declared on January 8th, 2022. With recent testing of staff and residents, we have learned that more individuals are infected with covid than we initially thought. Thankfully, residents and staff have either mild symptoms or no symptoms at all at this time. With that being said, they are all isolated to their rooms. Public Health has told us that we could allow short, supervised outings for our residents to get some fresh air around our property outside. Unfortunately, due to the number of staff in isolation, we do not have the capacity to supervise outings for our residents at this time. But that's where you can help!

We are asking if there are any of our Mount Carmel Family and Friends that would be willing to volunteer some time to supervise outings for our residents. This task would entail meeting a resident at their room, walking with them outside, and sanitizing anything they were to touch along the way. The resident would be able to spend some time outside (not off the Mount Carmel property), and then they would need to be escorted back to their room, with surfaces sanitized again on the way back. Though the weather is chilly, we believe that this would help our residents immensely during this difficult time. Even just sitting outside on the ramp for a few minutes would be better than being cooped up in their rooms. Volunteers would be required to wear full PPE for the duration of their time here, and have a rapid test performed on their arrival.

If you're interested in helping out, comment on this post or email Victoria at carmel@bellnet.ca

Thanks!

Merry Christmas from our family to yours! It has been a tough year with ever-changing Covid restrictions, loss of loved ones, and more, but we hope that today you can take pause to remember the true meaning of Christmas.

“The true meaning of Christmas is that God so loved us that He gave His only begotten Son; that God shared our human condition even to death; that salvation was accomplished by God within the grittiness of life.” - Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan.

The Ontario Government has updated the COVID-19 Rules and Regulations for Retirement Homes. There is A LOT of information, but emails have been sent to our POAs. If you did not receive the email or would like to be added to our email list, let us know!

One of key points of these updates is that visitors are now required to receive Rapid Antigen Testing before entry to the Home. These tests will be offered free of charge for Mount Carmel Visitors.

Questions? Email, call, message, or comment to let us know!
