You know that first big snowfall when you grab a shovel and think,
“I’ll just get this done quickly.”?

…And then the next morning, your back reminds you you’re not 20 anymore? 😅

You’re not imagining it, shoveling is one of the most physically demanding winter tasks, and even fit, active people injure themselves doing it.

Before the next snowfall hits, take 2 minutes to learn how to shovel smarter, not harder, and keep winter aches from turning into long-term problems.

TMJ dysfunction doesn’t just affect your jaw.
It can trigger headaches, ear pain, neck tension, sleep issues, and even shoulder tightness.

At BodyLab Recovery Science, physiotherapist Kristina Jerry and chiropractor Sarah Hopkins work together to treat the root cause, not just the symptoms.

In this blog, they break down:

✔ Why TMJ dysfunction happens
✔ The surprising symptoms people overlook
✔ How physiotherapy restores proper jaw mechanics
✔ How acupuncture reduces tension and clenching
✔ When it’s time to see a professional

If you’re noticing pain, clicking, grinding, or stiffness… this is your sign to learn more.

St. Catharines winter is here, and so are the injuries. ❄️

Snow shoveling seems simple, but physiotherapists treat low back strains, rotator cuff injuries, knee pain, and slips every single season.

Kristina Jerry, Physiotherapist at BodyLab Recovery Science, breaks down:

✔ The biggest mistakes people make
✔ Safe shoveling techniques that protect your spine
✔ When soreness is normal… and when it’s a red flag
✔ How physio can help you recover fast if you’ve already hurt yourself

If you shovel your driveway, you need to read this.

But that’s not all! Pair it with regular physiotherapy, chiropractic care, gentle strength training, and self-care at home, and you’ll feel stronger, move more easily, and stay active longer. Small, consistent habits make a big difference.

“How are you feeling?”

“You’re fine, don’t worry about it.”

Responses like this may seem harmless, but when repeated, they teach us to distrust our own emotions. Over time, we may start believing:

❌ “I am bad because I feel ___”
❌ “My needs don’t matter”
❌ “My feelings are less important than others’”

Validating feelings doesn’t mean avoiding challenges, it builds resilience, confidence, and authenticity.

Reflection: How were your feelings treated growing up?

Jaw pain when you chew? Clicking every time you yawn?
Most people brush it off… until it starts affecting eating, sleeping, and daily comfort.

TMJ dysfunction is far more common than most realize, and it rarely goes away on its own.

The good news? Physiotherapy and acupuncture together can make a massive difference in reducing pain, improving jaw movement, and calming the tension behind clenching and grinding.

If any of this sounds familiar, this blog will help you understand what’s going on, and what you can do about it.
