A powerful reminder about kindness and supporting each other is the right thing to do. Helping others in need is an expression of genuine, purposeful spirituality. In Christian context, by helping others we extend Grace to them as God extends to us. In other traditions the understanding is that kindness toward the most vulnerable is it indication of a social contract based on doing on to others as we would hope that they would do for us. Some might call this paying it forward.

There’s a poignant scene near the end of Frederick Buechner’s novel Brendan. The character Gildas stands up to reveal one of his legs missing from the knee down. As he reaches for his walking stick, he loses his balance. Brendan leaps up and catches him. “I’m as crippled as the dark world,.....
