Viruses are clearly circulating right now.
As part of my ongoing continuing education through Confident Clinician, I attended live deep dives this month on the latest evidence around upper respiratory infections and COVID-19.
Hereâs what stood out.
The biggest driver of infection risk isnât a supplement.
Itâs cardiometabolic health.
Insulin resistance, elevated BMI, higher CRP, hypertension â and especially an HbA1C above 6.5% â are consistently associated with:
⢠higher risk of infection
⢠more severe illness
⢠more complications
Prevention data supports:
⢠Mediterranean and plant-forward dietary patterns
⢠Echinacea for URTI prevention
⢠Probiotics
⢠Beta-glucans from yeast/fungi
⢠Correcting nutrient deficiencies
Whatâs less convincing than social media would suggest:
⢠Oil of oregano (no clinical trials)
⢠Zinc as a daily preventive in zinc-replete adults
⢠Vitamin D as a universal prevention strategy (correct deficiency, yes â guaranteed prevention, unclear)
When someone is already sick, certain strategies may shorten symptom duration â but prevention is foundational.
Midlife isnât a decline. Itâs a powerful transition.
And this is the season where strengthening your foundation matters most.
If youâre getting sick more often or taking longer to recover, we can look deeper.
