Do you find yourself pushing emotions aside—especially the ones that feel heavy or uncomfortable?

Emotions like sadness, anger, or frustration can feel intense, yet they serve a function. From a nervous system perspective, these responses are signals—indicators that something needs care or attention. They’re not flaws or failures. They’re part of how your brain and body process experience.

With support, it’s possible to build the capacity to notice and respond to emotions with more ease and regulation. Therapy offers a space to strengthen this skill, gently and effectively.

If you’ve found yourself consistently adjusting, accommodating, or going quiet to keep the peace—
you’re not alone.

Many people learn early on that relationships feel safer when they soften their needs, emotions, or opinions.
That connection is easier to hold when they set parts of themselves aside.

These patterns often begin in environments where:
• Emotional expression wasn’t welcomed or understood
• Boundaries were unclear or inconsistently respected
• Love felt conditional—based on being easy, helpful, or agreeable

Later in life, this may show up as:
• Feeling unclear about your own wants/needs
• Difficulty setting boundaries without guilt
• Consistently put others first at own expense
• Losing parts of yourself in relationships

At Wellness Counselling Centre, we offer a calm, personalized, supportive space and approach to explore these patterns— at your pace.
There is room for your voice, your needs, and your full self.

Day, evening, and weekend sessions available.

🧠 “Why do I feel like the adult in my relationship with my parent?”
If that question resonates, you may find insight in the concept of emotionally immature parenting — as explored in the book Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Lindsay C. Gibson.

This post breaks down the lasting impact emotionally immature parenting can have on adult children — including confusion, guilt, and difficulty trusting your own emotional needs. Understanding these dynamics is not about blame, but about gaining clarity and making space for growth.

📚 If you’ve been unpacking family patterns, emotional role reversals, or unexplained guilt, this may help you feel seen.

🧠 Do You See the World in All-or-Nothing Terms? You’re Not Alone.

Cognitive distortions are automatic thought patterns that can twist the way we see ourselves, others, and the world.
They’re common, especially when we’re stressed, overwhelmed, or emotionally activated — and noticing them is a powerful first step in therapy.

Today, we’re focusing on one of the most well-known distortions: black-and-white thinking (also called all-or-nothing or dichotomous thinking). It’s the tendency to view people or situations in extremes — success or failure, good or bad, right or wrong — with no space for the grey area in between.

This pattern often shows up in perfectionism, relationship conflict, low self-esteem, and anxiety. It can reinforce unrealistic expectations and lead to emotional reactivity or withdrawal.

You might notice this in yourself — or in your child or teen, especially when they’re under pressure or facing change.

The good news? Thought patterns like this can be explored and shifted. Evidence-based approaches like CBT and DBT help clients reframe black-and-white thinking into something more balanced, realistic, and kind.

At Wellness Counselling Centre, our team of therapists offers support for unhelpful thinking patterns using a warm, relational, and trauma-informed approach.

What Would Happen If You Showed Compassion to All the Parts of You?

Most people have heard of the idea of self-compassion.
And many people relate to feeling better when they receive compassion from others when they are hurting or suffering.

However, somehow it can feel uncomfortable or really challenging to give ourselves — or even certain parts of ourselves — compassion.

Kristin Neff, an expert on the subject of self-compassion, has found in her research that people who are self-compassionate:

✔️ Feel happier and more satisfied with life
✔️ Have a stable sense of self-worth
✔️ Are strong and resilient in difficult moments
✔️ Set healthy boundaries in relationships
✔️ Maintain strong self-care routines
✔️ Feel less lonely, isolated, and hopeless
✔️ Experience less burnout, mental health challenges, ruminations, sickness, and pain

Using Internal Family Systems (IFS) principles, here is a tool that can help you access your genuine compassion and offer it to the part of you that needs it most.
