Supporting Our Communities in Times of Grief

In the wake of the tragedies in Tumbler Ridge and Kitigan Zibi, many of us are grappling with the profound loss of young lives. These events have deeply affected small, close-knit communities where everyone feels the loss personally. The ripple effects are profound, touching neighbors, friends, classmates, and family members.

In these trying times, it’s important to acknowledge and validate our shared feelings of sadness, anger, helplessness, and even guilt. Here are some ways we can support each other:

Acknowledge the Depth of Grief
When tragedy strikes, especially involving children, the grief is sharper. Allow yourself to feel and name these emotions—it reflects your compassion and humanity.

Anchor Back Into What We Can Control
While we cannot change the past, we can focus on supporting each other and ensuring our own mental and emotional readiness.

Check In With One Another
Reach out to those who may be particularly affected. A simple, "How are you doing?" can make a world of difference.

Seek Out Support and Give Yourself Permission to Step Back
Our strength lies in knowing when to lean on others. Utilize community support, professional resources, or take a break from the news to prioritize your well-being.

Honour the Children and Communities Through Care and Connection
We can best honour the lives lost by caring for ourselves and each other, maintaining compassion and connection.
Trauma Integration and Processing Sessions

Recognizing the impact of these events, we are offering trauma processing sessions to support those affected. These sessions provide a safe space to integrate and process trauma. If you wish to participate, please reach out to lori@attch.org. All conversations are confidential.

At Lori Gill Psychotherapy, we are here to provide immediate and virtual support. If we can assist you during this difficult time, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Let’s keep the memory of those young lives and the communities of Tumbler Ridge and Kitigan Zibi in our hearts as we continue to support each other. 💙

🧠 Did you know? Our left brain loves to create meaning from our experiences. But trauma and extreme stress can disrupt this process, causing our minds to loop on “why” or “how” something happened.

✨ A healing strategy I often use:Instead of getting stuck in the loop, gently tell your mind:“I know I may never fully understand why this happened, but I am safe in this moment.”Or:“I know I may never fully understand why someone did this, but I am safe now and focusing on healing.”

Anchoring in what we know to be true helps calm the mind and body, making space for real healing.

If you or someone you know is struggling with trauma or stress, our therapists are here to help. Book a session or refer today—healing is possible.

Calling all Niagara Midwives, OB/GYNs, and Perinatal Professionals! 🕊️

We know you work tirelessly to support healthy pregnancies and births. At Lori Gill Psychotherapy, we want to be your clinical ally in supporting your most high-stress patients.

Join our Clinical Director, Lori Gill, for a virtual Lunch & Learn on March 4th at 12:00 PM.

We’ll be exploring the "4-Generation Rule" of trauma and how specialized interventions like Neurofeedback and ITATM™ can improve birth outcomes by regulating the parental nervous system.

We’ll also discuss "Psychological Stalling"—why labor stops when the body perceives a threat, and how you can help your clients feel safe enough to progress.

Let’s ensure every family in our community has the chance to start their journey with a regulated nervous system.

I’ve posted before about the importance of dripping rather than dumping dopamine and wanted to provide a mother healthy example. To further explain what I mean by dumping (intense but short-lasting, noticeable depletion of dopamine, causing us to crave more) vs dripping (gradual release, longer lasting effects, not followed by the drastic loss of this feeling) I am including below some information to illustrate this.

Alcohol and co***ne are known to boost dopamine but what many people don't know is how short lived this is and that it is followed by an apparent loss of this feeling following the dopamine dump which causes people to crave more to feel better.

When we drink an our dopamine levels will increase two fold (double) but this benefit peaks at about 15 mins then drops below baseline, which doesn’t feel good, causing us to crave more as our brain can tell we are going to being feeling worse than before we started drinking.

Co***ne is another example it is a really powerful and highly addictive drug. It increases our dopamine 2.5 fold packing at 9 minutes (so really short lived results) again driving us to get more as we begin to crash.

Cold water immersion however is the only behaviour so far that has been found to also have a 2.5 increase in dopamine and rather than peaking and crashing at 9 minutes the dopamine continues to rise for 2.5 hours - this is a long time and the gradual decline leaves us feeling refreshed and motivated rather than depleted and depressed.

So next time you have a shower try adding in the cold water, it is a shock at first but as with anything our body adapts and gradually we can tolerate more and more of this. Reminding your brain that this will be short-lived and will be beneficial can be helpful for making this more tolerable.

Thanks to for summarizing this info so well and to Gabby Mendes Yearbook, You Tube for hosting the talk.

🌱 How Trauma Impacts the Body – The Science, Simplified! 🌱

Trauma isn’t just emotional—it affects your whole body. Here’s how:

🧠 Nervous System: Chronic stress overwhelms our nerves, but simple tools like deep breathing can help reset your body.

🛡️ Immune System: Stress hormones first suppress, then overstimulate immunity—this can lead to inflammation and autoimmune issues.

🧬 Cellular Level: Trauma can change how our genes are read, even impacting future generations.

💭 Neurotransmitters: Trauma disrupts brain chemicals, increasing addiction risk and lowering serotonin (hello, depression).

🎶 Brain Waves & Structure: Trauma changes brainwave patterns and brain structure, but healing and growth are possible!

🔄 Neural Pathways: Our thoughts create strong brain pathways—change is possible with practice.

💡 Hormones: Trauma spikes cortisol (stress hormone), while oxytocin (the ‘love’ hormone) helps restore balance.

🌿 Digestion & Detox: Trauma slows digestion and disrupts gut health.

The good news? Many of these effects can be reversed!
