April is Cancer Awareness Month in Canada—a time to recognize the experiences of those affected by cancer and to reflect on the importance of ongoing care in survivorship.
For many individuals, lymphedema develops as a result of cancer treatment. Procedures such as lymph node removal and radiation can affect the lymphatic system, increasing the risk of chronic swelling and related complications—sometimes months or even years after treatment has ended. Greater awareness, early recognition, and access to appropriate care are essential to improving outcomes and quality of life.
Lymphedema is a lifelong condition, but with the right knowledge and support, it can be effectively managed. Education, early intervention, compression therapy, physical activity and appropriate exercise, and guidance from trained healthcare professionals all play an important role.
This April, we encourage you to:
đź’ś Learn the early signs and symptoms of lymphedema
đź’ś Understand your personal risk and how to reduce it
đź’ś Seek support and connect with qualified care providers
đź’ś Share trusted information and resources within your community
đź’ś Advocate for improved access to care and coverage across Canada
By increasing awareness of lymphedema—particularly in the context of cancer survivorship—we can help ensure that no one is left without the knowledge, care, and support they need. Visit our website to explore resources, education, and support, at: canadalymph.ca.
