We loved celebrating Galentine’s Day this week at Sophia Recovery Centre! Our clients enjoyed a fun plant swap, colourful nails, and time together celebrating friendship and support.

Galentine’s Day was created by Leslie Knope, a character from the TV show Parks and Recreation, to honour women, friendship, and non‑romantic love.

A big thank you to our amazing staff team for hosting this uplifting event together. 💛

In Memory of Mike O’Dell

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our valued friend and supporter, Mike O’Dell. Mike and Dianne have been close friends to the Sisters of Charity and longtime supporters of Sophia Recovery Centre. This beautiful pink tulip painting they donated still hangs in our foyer, welcoming every woman who comes through our doors.

Mike lived a life of service through education and community work. We are honoured that he chose Sophia Recovery Centre as one of the organizations to support in lieu of flowers.

Our hearts are with Dianne and all who loved him.
May his kindness and legacy continue to inspire us.

Celebrating 18 Years of Hope, Healing, and Community!
Founded February 4, 2008

Today we honour the story of how Sophia Recovery Centre began. A story rooted in compassion, courage, and community.

Sophia Recovery Centre was founded by Sister Arleen Brawley and Sister Mary Beth McCurdy in 2008. On the very first day the little house on Hazen Street opened its doors, something happened that Sister Mary Beth has never forgotten:

“The first visitor to ring the doorbell was a woman carrying a contribution of a delicious loaf of banana bread. Ever since that day, the doorbell has never stopped ringing.”

That small act of kindness became a symbol of what Sophia Recovery Centre would grow to be a welcoming place where women show up, lift one another up, and bring something meaningful. Sometimes a story, sometimes strength, sometimes simply their presence.

Through the years, each new visitor has added to a growing community of wisdom, courage, and shared support. What began as a dream has become a powerful network of women walking the path of recovery together.

As we celebrate 18 years, we honour our founders, our staff, our volunteers, our partners, and every woman who has walked through our doors, whether with banana bread, bravery, or hope in her heart.

Thank you for helping keep the doorbell ringing. 💜

We loved hosting a relaxing spa day for our PCAP moms and their little ones! 💕

The Parent Child Assistance Program (PCAP) is a three‑year, in‑home support program for mothers who used alcohol or substances during pregnancy.

PCAP provides trauma‑informed, evidence‑based, relationship‑focused support that builds confidence, stability, and strong community connections.

A beautiful day of care and connection. 💙

We are pleased to welcome Lily Sherwood to Sophia Recovery Centre as she completes her final field placement in the NBCC Human Service Practitioner program, a two‑year diploma. Lily is the first student from this program to complete a placement with us - a partnership we look forward to strengthening.

Lily chose Sophia Recovery Centre because, in her words:
"I wanted to work with women and support them in building long‑term success, not just meeting immediate needs."

Her commitment to empowerment and community aligns beautifully with our mission, and we are excited to support her professional growth during this final stage of her studies.

Welcome, Lily!

Looking back on the wonderful time we shared with clients and staff at our Annual Christmas Luncheon in December! It was a beautiful celebration of community and connection.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us, to Sandra Bohn for the beautiful cello music, and to the NHL Legends Tour and Steve Walton for their generous donation. Your support made this event truly special.

Here’s to an amazing 2026 filled with growth, joy, and togetherness!

The overdose crisis in Saint John is getting worse, and we’re seeing the impact firsthand at Sophia Recovery Centre.

In a CBC interview yesterday, Laura MacNeill from Avenue B Harm Reduction shared that their team is now responding to overdoses inside their own office as the drug supply becomes more toxic and more community members are dying far too young. These heartbreaking losses affect the whole city and they deeply affect the women we support. [avenueb.ca]

Every week, women come to us carrying grief, fear, trauma, and uncertainty. As the risks in our community grow, so does the need for safe spaces, connection, and compassionate recovery support.

At Sophia, we remain committed to offering:

💜 Free, stigma‑free programs
💜 Trauma and research informed peer support
💜 Grief and loss support
💜 Community, connection, and hope

We are grateful for the life‑saving work Avenue B does on the front lines. Harm reduction and recovery are both essential and both help keep our community safer.

🎧 Listen to the CBC interview - see link in the comments.

If you or someone you love needs support, Sophia’s doors are open. 💜
