🕊️ From the early days of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing to today’s modern hospital, compassion has always been at the heart of our mission. 💛

As we approach Remembrance Day, our thoughts turn to the generations who served and cared for others — in times of peace and war.

The St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation reflects on our heroes who served and sacrificed.

Nursing Sister Anna Irene Stamers, a proud graduate of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Class of 1915, served with courage and compassion during the First World War. She was among several Canadian nurses who lost their lives when the hospital ship Llandovery Castle was tragically sunk in 1918. 🪻

🕰️ Throwback to 1940!

St. Joseph’s Hospital in Saint John proudly received a new set of medical instruments — a remarkable step forward for patient care at the time.

Pictured: Sisters M. Catherine (Mutter), Marie de Lourdes (Kelly) and M. Veronica (Murphy).

These additions helped our dedicated nurses and physicians provide more precise treatments and reflected the hospital’s ongoing commitment to innovation and compassion.

Even then, St. Joseph’s was leading the way in delivering exceptional care to our community. 💙

🚗 Look Both Ways – Cross at corners and use crosswalks.

🏡 Drivers – Slow down and stay alert in residential areas!!

🍬 Check Your Treats – Have an adult inspect candy before eating.

🧙‍♀️ Costume Safety – Make sure masks don’t block vision.

🐾 Be Pet-Friendly – Keep pets indoors and away from candy.

Established by the Sisters of Charity, the school opened in 1912 alongside St. Joseph’s Hospital, with a mission to train compassionate and skilled nurses.

For decades, young women from across the Maritimes came to Saint John to study nursing in a program that combined classroom instruction with intensive, hands-on clinical experience in the hospital.

The school continued until the early 1970s, when nursing education in New Brunswick transitioned from hospital-based programs to college and university settings.

The legacy of the St. Joseph's School of Nursing lives on through its graduates, who contributed profoundly to healthcare in Saint John.
