Thank you to CBC for interviewing us and helping raise awareness about The Urquhart program 💜

An even bigger thank you to the parents who shared their stories and helped make this program what it is. We know a few parents couldn’t make the interview, but know that we are so grateful for you! 💜

Sometimes we find it difficult to explain the program for exactly what it is. When we thought about it, it’s because it’s A LOT of different things. There’s many moving parts that aren’t always seen and it’s much more than a program that offers counselling. It’s multidisciplinary, it’s complex, it’s designed to be flexible, receive feedback, and grow/change WITH that feedback. We’re so proud that the program we created allows for more bubbles to be added as time goes on.

Growth is healthy and we wanted a program that could grow and change as it ran; adjusing to the needs of the population we aim to help.

This is what the program has always looked like in my (Sarah’s) head. I thought I would share it with you all because it might add some clarity to what the program truly is and what it will be capable of 💜. It’s only been officially running for a little over a month so some of these things are in progress, BUT the cool part is, they’re all running!

The program also doesn’t solely focus on birth trauma. It’s a program for any challenge that might occur in the perinatal period (during pregnancy, birth, and/or postpartum). But raising awareness of birth trauma is a big part of the education and awareness aspects because it deserves a spotlight due to being under recognized.

The EPIQ conference in Banff was such a great experience! A room that was filled every day with people who share the same passion for helping and supporting babies and their families💜

Not only did we get to share what we’ve been up to in New Brunswick (offering presentations/education on Trauma Informed Perinatal Care and The Urquhart program), but we also got to network with people from all over Canada and met some incredible parent partners!

We feel so grateful to be doing this work 💜

A big thank you to Dr. Newman and Dr. Nunes for all their help and support. It wouldn’t have been possible (or as pretty- the poster was beautiful) without you both!

**Sarah has a few appointments left in Feb and openings in March if anyone is looking to make an appointment. Also, please spread the word about the “check ins” after hospital discharge, they are free 💜

This evening, we got to show the office space to some of the parents who helped create The Urquhart Program! 💜

We also did some interviews that we’ll share more about later 😉

What a great full circle moment having some of them in the office space and being able to reflect on the program and why it exists. We feel SO grateful!

Cost and accessing services:

The Urquhart Program runs through Gentle Path Counselling Services. Sessions are $125 each and are usually a hour long. If you have insurance, Gentle Path can direct bill Blue Cross and accepts most insurance companies, but you may be required to pay upfront and submit your own claim. Please check with your policy to be sure it covers counselling and reach out to us if you have further questions!

The “check-ins” are 15 minute phone calls and are NO COST. You can access these with or without having booked sessions. You just need to opt in to the post discharge “check ins” on the self-referral form.

Accessing servics can be done by filling out a self-referral form directly on the Gentle Path website or by phone. PDF professional referral forms are also available if you are a professional looking to refer a patient or client.

These forms can all be found at:

We recognize that one of the biggest barriers to accessing support is financial. Due to this, subsidized sessions are available if needed and an application is available on the Gentle Path website. While there’s a limit to the number of subsidized sessions available to ensure equitable access, we are actively seeking out opportunities to raise funds to expand this support. We have been/will also be looking for community donations to help us provide subsidized services. If you know of anyone who might be interested in supporting the program, let us know!

We appreciate your patience as we work to address this significant barrier to accessing care 💜

We want to take this moment to thank Gentle Path for taking on The Urquhart Program! Especially to Lisa, Trish, and Katie for believing in it and helping to get it off the ground 💜

The Urquhart Program is named in honour of Judy Urquhart 💜

Judy was one of the founders of Gentle Path back in 1998. At the time, Judy’s vision was to be able to provide mental health services to everyone, regardless of social or financial status, and to bridge the gaps in who had access to care and support. Her vision and passion have been evident through Gentle Path for many, many years.

This is how I met Judy! Both Judy and Gentle Path showed up for me when I needed them. I met Judy in my twenties, and she was my counsellor for years. Some of the things I learned from her stick with me today. I wouldn’t be who I am without her.

Judy passed away in October of 2021. It means a lot that I was able to thank her for everything she helped me with personally. Because I started my masters in 2023, I never did get to tell her that she also inspired me professionally (I never thought I’d become a counsellor, lol).

I still remember years ago when this program was just a tiny dream, saying to my partner, “I want to create a program to help the perinatal population and I want to name it after Judy”. And LOOK at us now. I asked permission from Judy’s husband to use her name, ran the program by him, and invited him to see a presentation! He’s been so supportive of the program, and the fact that he believes Judy would be proud is one of our biggest accomplishmets.

The Urquhart Program runs through Gentle Path and strives to keep Judy’s visions and values alive. We want to continue her legacy by removing barriers to accessing support and by offering specialized services regardless of social or financial status.

My name is Sarah and I’m thrilled to finally introduce everyone to The Urquhart Program! This has been years in the making and truly is my dream come true 💜

A little about me:

I have been a registered nurse for 14 years this year, and I’ve spent the last 7 years working full-time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Saint John. I chose to go back to school to get a masters degree because I recognized that there are HUGE gaps in how we’re supporting parents. This is true in general, but is especially true when there’s loss, birth trauma, a NICU stay, etc. I wanted to do something to help, so this is where my idea started!

I graduated with a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology and became a Licensed Counselling Therapist- Candadite (LCT-C) in 2025. I completed birth and reproductive trauma training, and I have a certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with a focus on women’s reproductive mental health.

During grad school and through my trainings, I was always thinking about this program and how to make it TRULY helpful. I had the education and training, I had the work experience in the NICU, but how do I truly know what would be helpful? I started having conversations in the NICU and I interviewed parents in our community. They are the real creators of this program. I just used the resources I had to bring it to life! I’ll forever be thankful they opened up to me and trusted me with their stories and recommendations.

I couldn’t have brought this program to life without the help of Dr. Alana Newman. She’s an incredible Neonatologist in our NICU, a fierce advocate for parents, and is a wonderful friend. She has worked tirelessly beside me helping me develop and launch the program. We share the same passion for improving support and care for parents, and I feel grateful to run the program with her by my side.

Lastly (this is already too long 😅), during the fall of 2025, I was able to travel the province and give presentations on trauma informed care that’s specific to the perinatal population. I presented to over 280 healthcare workers, and the presentations will continue this year. Education and advocacy are very important to me, and are a foundational part of The Urquhart Program.

I want to create safer environments for the perinatal population, help to decrease trauma, create more supportive communities, advocate for the reduction of barriers to support (especially financial), and help care for parents in the ways that THEY need to be cared for.

In the words of Taylor Swift, “Leave it with me, I protect the family” 💜

What does The Urquhart Program offer?

The program offers professional counselling and support for a variety of challenges and/or concerns that could arise in the perinatal period. These include things like birth trauma, loss, NICU admissions, postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, life changes, adjusting to parenthood, etc.

It also offers “check ins” after discharge and an ability to connect people to other resources that exisit in our community.

The program runs through Gentle Path Counselling Services and this is helpful because Gentle Path can offer counselling services to children, couples, and other family members. This allows for family centred care all in one location!

What makes The Urquhart Program unique?

The first reason the program is unique is because the founder and lead counsellor is also a registered nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This combination of a nursing background and counselling allows for comprehensive support addressing both mental and physical health needs but also practical aspects like healing and baby care.

Another unique feature of the program is that it offers phone “check ins” at specific time intervals after discharge from hospital. This helps bridge the gap in support from hospital to home, and can create an extra layer of support in the community.
