Some good tips to follow this season from my good friend and colleague Dr. Jarrett Williams ! The sixth thing that could help your back pain due to golfing: see your chiropractor !

5 EASY TIPS TO PREVENT OR REDUCE BACK PAIN DUE TO GOLFING:

1. Warm-Up Properly

Studies have shown that golfers who have stiffer back rotation and less joint range of motion have more back pain. This is because stiff players are forcing their bodies to move past the comfort zone, rather than using smooth, fluid motions. By stretching and warming up correctly, you can decrease your risk of injury and alleviate joint stiffness. Some of the best stretches for golfers are:
Over the Head Shoulder Stretch
Chest Opener With Forward Bend Stretch
Low-lunge Hip Flexor Stretch
Standing IT Band Stretch

2. Improve Your Swing Mechanics

Don’t try to hit as hard as possible when you step up to the tee. Not only does this cause erratic ball placement, but the unnatural effort increases the chance of over exerting your back and causing injury.

3. Maintain Neutral Spine Positioning

When leaning over the ball before swinging, keep your spine in its relaxed position of comfort and bend with your hips and knees.

4.Strengthen Your Core

Golf requires serious stamina. The majority of back injuries from swinging are due to overuse and lack of control through the swing. The stronger your core, the more you are able to have a composed swing repetitively. Be sure to exercise and strengthen your hips, glutes, lats, and obliques — The core is more than abs!

5. Don’t Try to Play Like a Pro

If you are relatively new to golf, don’t start out by playing 36 holes on your first round. This can cause extreme soreness and cause you to injure yourself by overexerting. Assess your capability and the amount of time you can comfortably play, and go from there.

Today, the Ontario government issued a province-wide, stay-at-home order, effective Thurs., Jan. 14, 2021, at 12:01 a.m. The order requires everyone to remain at home, except for essential purposes, such as accessing health care services or grocery shopping.

There are no changes to rules around regulated health care professionals, such as chiropractors, registered massage therapists and physiotherapists.

According to Ontario’s Reopening Ontario (A Flexible Response to COVID-19) Act, 2020 (effective Jan. 11, 2021), businesses that can continue to remain open include: health care services provided by regulated health professionals (point #53); organizations that provide health care, including clinics and independent health facilities (point #55) and manufacturers, wholesalers and businesses that provide logistical support of or for products and/or services that support the delivery of health care in all locations (point #58).

Patients and members of the public will be able to continue to visit their chiropractor during their regular hours of operation. And chiropractors will continue to comply with strict PPE and safety precautions to protect their patients and team members.
