Thanks Kids Zen Inc. for these helpful tips this holiday season:
With the holidays upon us, family gatherings can be excitingโฆ and a lot for some kids. New faces, loud rooms, changed routines, and social expectations can stir up big feelings; especially for children who are shy, anxious, or highly sensitive!
Here are a few gentle ways to help your child navigate large family groups with confidence:
1. Prepare Ahead Together โ Talk about what to expect: who will be there, what the environment might feel like, and what your child can do if they start feeling overwhelmed. Predictability helps reduce anxiety.
2. Create a Safe Start โ Instead of pushing for big hellos, allow your child to warm up at their own pace. A wave, a smile, or simply staying close to you at first is perfectly okay.
3. Pack Comfort Tools โ Bring along items that help soothe: headphones, a fidget toy, a book, or anything familiar that helps them feel grounded.
4. Honour Their Temperament โ Every child is wired differently. Sensitive, cautious, and observant kids are not โtoo muchโ or โnot enough,โ they simply need gentle pacing and understanding.
5. Celebrate Small Wins โ Did your child say Hi? Join a game? Stay in the room a few minutes longer? Thatโs fantastic! These steps matter โค๏ธ
