Summer is officially here! There is a heat warning in place for southern Ontario and it's important for everyone to stay cool and keep hydrated (ideally not just water, but also electrolyte-containing fluids such as Pedialyte or Gatorade if overheated).

Many medications can affect the fluid and electrolyte levels in your body. Electrolytes are essential for normal muscle function and the heart is just a bundle of muscles. Normally things are in balance and everything is fine. But during a heat wave, this can lead to trouble if you are overheated, dehydrated AND continue to take certain medications regularly like you are feeling fine.

Medications such as Jardiance, metformin, furosemide, and others that would be safe in normal circumstances, can be harmful if not carefully assessed on an individual basis. Please note, this is not medical advice, please consult your healthcare provider for individualized advice.
