Today is World Mental Health Day! We’re focusing on the critical importance of mental health in the workplace. Did you know that 70% of employed Canadians are concerned about their psychological safety at work, yet many suffer in silence? () This impacts not only mental well-being but physical health too.

We believe no one should struggle alone. Let’s work together to create healthier, safer work environments that prioritize mental health.

💚 Let’s break the stigma and start the conversation.

For some folks, this new-for-now normal of people wearing masks will feel unsettling. We have an amazing process within us called neuroception. Neuroception is a rapid safety assessment tool we do not consciously control. It allows us to look at a human face, gauge someone’s posture and listen to voice tones while it very quickly sends a message to the brain of SAFETY or DANGER about a person. When someone is wearing a mask, there is a lot of information from a face we miss out on. Our brain 🧠 is doing the best it can right now to decide whether someone is safe or unsafe and masks may trigger the unsafe alert frequently. Please be gentle with yourselves, you are not bananas for feeling uneasy about faces being covered. It’s all new territory and you are getting used to it ❤️👌🏿

June COVID-19 Update:
The health and safety of our clients, community, as well as our team are our highest priority. As we navigate the COVID-19 Pandemic it has been incredibly important to us to adhere to the recommended Public Health guidelines for the safe operation of Clinical Counselling services as we continue to serve our community.
Currently, WorkSafeBC recommends “Where possible, provide virtual services for clients and offer in-person services only if necessary.” Given these guidelines, we will continue to operate throughout the summer months with secure video or phone sessions only as we plan a gradual re-opening process.
The risk of contracting COVID-19 is reportedly increased by many factors which include the length of time spent indoors, being in an enclosed space, as well as ventilation. We have been working diligently to learn and implement the recommendations from WorkSafeBC and our Professional Associations. Our tentative plan is a gradual welcome of clients for in-person appointments on a case by case basis beginning September 1.
Our team is grateful to be entrusted to provide mental health care via Clinical Counselling services to our community members, especially during these past few months. You have all had to be flexible and adaptive – we appreciate your efforts and are honoured to have your patience and understanding.
Your mental health matters.
With care, the Shuswap Clinical Counselling Centre – Capreece Bowers, Annette Ruel, Kendra Kieft and Zoe Olson

A trauma informed perspective is crucial for our kids as they return to school, either next week or at a later time. We love this piece with some tips and things you may notice in your kiddos as they adjust to this new “for now” normal. A brain that does not feel safe cannot learn ❤️

Over the past few weeks we have seen endless debate about whether schools should reopen. Facebook has become a hive of home schooling parodies and every man and his dog has posted homeschooling effectiveness tips. We’ve seen everything from the ‘just spend time together that’s more important t...

We are missing the face to face connections at the Centre deeply. As many of you know, in-person counselling has been announced as part of BC’s next phase in reopening next week. We continue to monitor the recommendations closely, and are waiting for some further guidelines on how we can best operate if open to the public. These guidelines are still being developed. We met at length last evening and made a tough decision to offer Telehealth sessions only for the next while. We will re-evaluate this decision in June. Our priority is one of utmost care and diligence to the safety of our clients and their families and our community as a whole. Thank you for your continued flexibility in connecting with us virtually. We cannot wait for the day in-person support can resume, but it is not right now ❤️

This is the second year we have decided to sponsor a Wellness Award for a grade 12 graduating student at our local high school, Salmon Arm Secondary. This is also the second year we have resorted to drawing the recipient’s name at random because wow.... what amazing youth we have in our community 👏🏼👌🏿🤜🏽 We simply could not bring ourselves to choose! All of the nominees stories of mental wellness were so inspiring. It is too hard to choose 🤗 Thanks to SAS for having us be a part of celebrating the achievements of your graduates again this year.

Dear SAS class of 2020,

You have been dreaming of this celebration for a long time. The loss of it not being able to happen as you thought is so real. You didn’t look ahead in your dreams and imagine a Pandemic 🦠 would interrupt throwing your cap into the air and dancing the night away. We see you. Your mental health matters. Keep dreaming big :)

Maybe your heart is depleted and heavy today. Maybe your heart is full after you were loved and celebrated yesterday. Either one and everything in between.... however your post-mother’s day today is feeling... is a-ok 👌🏿To the “typical” culturally recognized mamas, the birth mamas, the foster mamas, the adoptive mamas, the mamas who lost their babies, the mamas seeking to be mamas, the mamas who chose abortion at one time, the mamas who weren’t mothered in a way they needed, the mamas not called mamas but do a ton of mother in their role, the folks who have lost their mamas, the folks who don’t have a relationship or it’s a tricky one with their mamas.... whatever your situation is we see you and hold space for you ❤️
