Spring medicine: Urtica dioica (Stinging nettle)

Nettles are not found in dense forest, but rather at its periphery, or in areas recently cleared. From a distance nettles blend in to the flora, but up close the unmistakable spines help identification. If you're unsure, try picking it without gloves 😬 The spines contain formic acid, the same thing that makes an ant bite sting!

Harvest carefully (and of course, sustainably) leaving the strongest plants to thrive and not picking every leaf from a plant. Both the leaves and root can be used, but most commonly people forage the leaf. It can be dried and used for tea or tinctures or added fresh to soups and virtually any dish that calls for spinach or to which you'd like to add leafy greens. One of my favourite ways to eat it is in a frittata with dill and feta. The main thing is that it be cooked in order to neutralize the sting!

Medicinally, the leaves are a mild diuretic helping in swelling disorders related to kidney or cardiac function. Nettles are rich in nutrients, traditionally consumed as one of the first available greens to help the body detox after a winter of consuming preserved, starchy & fatty foods. They are often used in the treatment of eczema, arthritis, allergies, and gout. Nettles are also indicated in states of deficiency, such as postpartum or anemias (they’re rich in iron!) and make a nice addition to a tea that can be sipped throughout the day. The root is typically used for benign prostastic hyperplasia.

Later in the season, the stem was used by indigenous people to weave fishing nets. Related to h**p, nettle becomes very sinewy and yields resilient fibre. The seeds, rich in fatty acids, are a nutritive adaptogen, and can be consumed as you might h**p hearts, on salads or in food. An anecdote that attests to their nutritional value is that of dishonest horse salemen in the 1800's who would feed their horses handfuls of nettle seeds before taking them to market to make their coat shiny and fetch a better price 🐎 Extrapolating, nettle seeds may help to rejuvenate hair & skin in those who are deficient

Allergy season 🌼🌾🌳

At this time of year, many people begin to suffer from seasonal allergies to grasses, trees, and plants that are beginning to bloom.

Itchy eyes, congestion, sneezing, coughing, post nasal drip, swollen glands, and sore throats are common symptoms. Some people also experience digestive disturbances due to cross reactivity of pollens and food proteins.

Here are some of the naturopathic tools I use to diagnose & ease symptoms of seasonal allergies:

🌱 In office dermal scratch test to confirm diagnosis of environmental allergens now available at Madrona Integrative Health

🌱Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) to desensitize the immune system to identified allergens

🌱Improve lymphatic circulation

🌱Nebulized glutathione delivered via inhalation to the sinuses and upper respiratory tract

🌱Supplements to reduce reactivity via immune regulation and histamine reduction using vitamin c, quercetin, NAC, vitamin D, bromelain, & including stinging nettles 🌿

🌱Remove food sensitivities & reduce inflammatory foods

I’m happy to begin my return to practice following the birth of my first child and a beautiful maternity leave.

My initiation into motherhood is a potent reminder of how important it is to tend to one’s wellness - body, mind, and spirit (not always an easy task, I know!).

With this in mind, I look forward to reconnecting with existing patients and welcoming new patients as availability allows.

To book, please follow the link in my profile or contact directly either of my practice locations: Madrona Integrative Health + Vancouver Naturopathic Clinic

Everyone thinks of nettles as a spring food/medicine. The fresh leaves are most tender & nutrient dense early in the season, a perfect tonic for a winter traditionally spent eating rich and preserved foods. But towards the end of summer nettles yield another potent medicine, and this time in preparation for the coming colder months.

The seeds are rich in fatty acids and are known as nutritive adaptogens, benefiting the adrenal and endocrine systems. Translating their traditional use into modern terms, a daily dose of nettle seeds are perfect for those who are wired/tired or feeling burnt out. They are nourishing, revitalizing, and said to improve libido 💃

An anecdote attests to their nutritive value: Shady horsesalemen in the 1800’s would feed their horses handfuls of nettle seeds prior to taking them to market because it would improve their coats so significantly they would fetch a better price. It is said that a German doctor upon learning this began giving his depleted patients a few tablespoons and noted that within weeks those lethargic were suddenly spry! Extrapolating, this readily available food medicine is worth exploring for listlessness of mind, spirit, and body.

The seeds can be added to food, blended in seasoning mixes or baked into crackers.

As always when harvesting, take only what you need, use what you take, don’t forage where there are only few plants (fortunately a rare problem with nettle!), and be thankful to those whose land you are harvesting from and to the plant itself for providing in abundance, season after season 🌾💫

5) Social connections, Ritual, & Cold Water 👯‍♀️💦

Lastly, the psychosocial aspect of a cold-water hydrotherapy practice cannot be underestimated. The sense of achievement, the commitment to oneself and to a and the opportunity for social connection when practicing regular cold water immersion are all known to play a role in supporting mental health.

At a time when physical distancing is still recommended, but we know the consequences of social isolation on our mental health are significant, consider enlisting a and creating a chilly ritual together. Even just dipping your toes in is invigorating!

As a general rule, start slow and acclimatise through repeated exposure in the form of short doses of cold water exposure followed by warm clothes, warm drinks, and warming exercises. If you are pregnant, have cardiovascular issues or other health conditions, consult a doctor before taking the plunge.

Ready for an in nature? Prepare mentally, get warm first, bring a friend, and breathe! ✌️

And if jumping in a cold lake, ocean, or river isn’t possible, having a cold shower at home is! 🚿 🧊

4) Stress Resilience & Cold Water 💦 💥 🧊

Plunging into the cold acts as a short-lived, low dose physiological stressor that is part of a process known as Basically, short exposure to the cold temporarily puts our system into sympathetic, survival mode. Now, while we don’t want to spend our entire lives in a stressed-out, sympathetic mode (nor do we want to spend longer than tolerable in cold water!), brief and repeated exposure to physical stress may actually improve our overall stress response in a process called cross-adaptation.

Some researchers propose that in practicing cold-water immersion regularly, individuals are developing a physical to the stimulant of cold. By habituating to the cold, they are developing an adaptive response to one particular stressor, which through cross-adaptation may translate into other, unrelated stress triggers we face in day to day life.

The idea is that if you can handle the cold, you can handle anything 💪 🧊
