Say hi to Brian!

Brian is one of the newest Honours students to join our lab!

Brian is completing his undergraduate degree in Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Saskatchewan.

Brian will spend his time in the lab working on a project that focuses on inhibiting the entry of RNA binding protein hnRNP A1 antibody into neurons by blocking clatharin mediated endocytosis in EAE mice to prevent hnRNP A1 dysfunction and potentially decrease neurodegeneration.

Outside of the lab you can find Brian cooking new dishes that he finds on facebook, getting lost in science fiction, playing guitar, snowboarding, and exploring Saskatoon on his longboard with friends.

In case you didn't already know, May is MS Awareness Month!

Canadian Country Artist- Jess Moskaluke started a two part series titled "Jess on MS" in an effort to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, as well as awareness to help people learn and understand what Multiple Sclerosis really is.

For part two of her series- Jess reached out to Dr. Levin for an in-depth discussion about all things MS and our discoveries in the lab!

Meet Patricia!

Patricia is a Research Assistant in our lab!

Patricia's job is to learn, and help everyone else in the lab learn, as well. This involves asking research questions – then, figuring out if other people have asked the same questions – and helping students and trainees in the lab figure out how to answer such questions. Secondarily, she gets to help people find the fun in difficult moments of research, and facilitate research independence in lab trainees.

Molecular biology is Patricia's passion, and she joined the lab to examine the roles of RNA binding proteins – particularly those involved with stress granules – on neurodegeneration. This involves examining changes in RNA binding protein abundance and distribution in animal models for Multiple Sclerosis, as well as doing more in-depth characterization of these proteins and their functions in cells (primary neurons).

Along with molecular biology, Patricia also comes from a virology background, and since viruses have a long history with Multiple Sclerosis, she will be examining connections between viruses and Multiple Sclerosis: animal infections that result in similar diseases, shared molecular patterns between virus and host that could be linked to autoimmune disease, and viruses that exacerbate Multiple Sclerosis.

Patricia spend a lot of her spare time reading and talking about science in general, and indulging her love of science fiction, from novels to TV shows and movies. She spends the rest of her time adventuring in Dungeons and Dragons (yep, that D&D) and cuddling with her very cute dog and husband.

Happy Team Member Tuesday!

Say Hi to Ali,

Ali is a Post- Doctoral Research Associate at the Office of the SK MS Clinical Research Chair,

His role in the lab is to plan and conduct day-to-day experimental activities relating to assigned research projects, analyze data and interpret results. Ali also contributes to scientific literature as well as research proposals and new protocols.

Ali's research program is aimed at discovering and elucidating the molecular signaling pathways involved in the relationship between neurodegeneration and demyelination with the focus on the role of RNA binding proteins (RBPs) in neurological disease such as Multiple sclerosis (MS).

Outside of the lab, Ali loves spending quality time with family and friends, reading a good book, watching movies and listening to music to relax!

Meet Amber!

Amber is a Masters Student at the University of Saskatchewan! She is currently taking classes, alongside actively working on her thesis project! She spends her days learning new techniques, collaborating with others, and helping fellow students in the lab.

In the lab, Amber is studying the contribution of altered hnRNP A1 expression to the pathogenesis of neurodegeneration in in-vitro and in-vivo models of MS.

Outside of the lab, Amber spends her time taking care of her two fur babies, making science tik toks with her fellow lab mates, writing poetry and binging Love is Blind on Netflix.
