Om Improvements Massage Therapy & Yoga Building balance together through movement, mindfulness, massage, gratitude and education. Yoga and massage therapy offered by Heather Rae Robson.

Building balance together through movement, mindfulness, massage, gratitude and education. At Om Improvements, yoga classes are never larger than 8 people. Students are asked to complete a health history and a wellness wish list. This allows me to offer safe and personalized yoga instruction in order to help you achieve your individual health and wellness goals. The ancient tradition of yoga has much more to offer than the benefits of the physical postures, and it is my goal to present these elements in an obtainable manner, making them applicable to modern day society. In addition to the 200 hour yoga teacher training I completed in 2007, I also have over 1000 hours teaching experience. I have been a practicing RMT since August, 2016 and have also completed a psychology degree giving me a wealth of knowledge regarding the body and mind. I am dedicated to continued education in order to always offer the best to my clients. Hatha flow, restorative and private yoga classes available. Online booking and direct billing for most insurance companies.

There are times when fast or explosive movement is appropriate, like if you are training for a certain sport. Our goal here is to cultivate mindfulness so we are moving slow and controlled. Each increment is as important as the next. By practicing moving with our breath we strengthen the mind/body connection. This allows us to be more efficient in our body whether it is in daily activity or intense sports training. Once we have developed this relationship with our body, we are more in tune to when it is appropriate to turn it up a notch or to ease off. This sequence for strong hips and legs can be done on it’s own or as a compliment to leg day:) Filter: post run film of sweat.

Here is some more mindful movement to help your neck and shoulders feel better. As a massage therapist, this is the area people most often ask me to work on. A massage can work wonders, but practicing mindful movement that strengthens and stretches the numerous muscles of the area can help reduce chronic pain.

Today I am showing a progression of postures to help you develop the strength, flexibility, balance, and mindfulness that are required to find ease and awareness in Warrior 3. But more importantly I am hoping to illustrate that the practice of “basic” postures is beneficial in itself. It’s hard not to get caught up with the idea that the point of yoga is to do handstands or tie yourself in a pretzel while wearing an expensive outfit or bathing suit (just search on IG and you will see what I mean). I think this is why many people are quick to say that yoga isn’t for them.

Doing something challenging offers individuals an opportunity for growth but if someone attempts something that is unrealistic for their capabilities they will likely fail and become discouraged (or worse, get hurt). When practicing yoga I recommend working just outside your comfort zone, where you feel challenged but where you are able to find stability and your breath.

Reinvigorate yourself with this 10 minute sequence at the wall. Feel like you have time for more? Mix and match previous videos to customize yourself a class🤓. If you are a client and have a question about a specific posture or how you can modify something, please ask at your next appointment and I will do my best to accommodate you. Or you can send me a message and I will try to incorporate it into a future video.

Today’s sequence is focused on the hips and core. This is the first video I tried to make post covid about a week ago. I thought I was ready to get back in action but if you are observant you will notice my cheeks got quite rosy, my legs were shaking a bit, and I was a little out of breath. Just my body reminding me I needed a little more recovery time. Take some time to listen to what your body is trying to tell you today.
P.S. You will want to do the first part on a soft surface. Carpet or a blanket should do the trick!

Today I am offering some ideas for “restorative” yoga for when your body lacks energy but craves a different posture. I am not the biggest fan of referring to one style of yoga or movement as restorative because it suggests that other types may not be..when we all know that what is restorative for ourselves can vary from day to day. I think the label likely started as a marketing tool? Anyway, here is some passive and restful yoga to help you feel better. Much of it could be adapted to your bed if you have trouble getting to the floor.

Happy Wednesday! I have been a bit under the weather the past week and I found this quick lower body refresh helped relieve the lower back/upper butt pain that came with 5 days of couch rest. The sequence from March 16th was also helpful. If you have balance issues you could use alternating arms (or both) on a chair or wall for added stability.

Here is a little something for you neck and shoulders.
Someone suggested to me to shorten these videos into swipeable segments. Makes sense, make them shorter, more concise, ultimately more palatable to the social media users..but the idea didn’t feel quite right with me. My intent is to encourage people to take 10 minutes to slow down and connect with themselves so they can feel better..and as someone who is guilty of swiping and scrolling I am very aware of how it feeds my anxiety, like a delicious buffet of inadequacy.
So, I guess the first challenge is to take a break from swiping. I will continue to make these painfully long videos as a reminder to take 10 minutes for yourself. Whether it is to do a sequence with me, or to take a walk or listen to a record..just take 10 swipe-free minutes for yourself and I bet you will feel better than you did before.

Om Improvements has moved! During the pandemic I transitioned to teaching only private yoga classes (vs. public group classes), and the lease on the current space ends March 31st…so it seems natural to move the business to my home space. The new location is on 6th street East, only 5 blocks south of the previous spot. The new address will be in your booking notifications. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your continued support!

Here’s a little sequence to encourage happy hips and a strong core.
It is beneficial to learn things (whether it is yoga or something else) from different teachers because it allows us to experience a different perspective that may give us a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Different yoga teachers may teach postures differently, and an individual teacher may teach a posture in various ways. Don’t let it confuse you or get caught up with whether one way is right or wrong. Instead, question why they are teaching it that way. There is likely a reason, benefit, or goal..(hopefully not just because that is how they learned it).

P.S. I realize my face is dark but you can see what you need to and I like the windows. Plus, it makes me a little more mysterious 🥸

This is your weekly reminder to fit some mindful movement into your day. Here is a sequence I like for waking my body up or for shaking off the work day. My intention is to offer some basic movement that it accessible to as many people as possible. If you are ever in doubt of whether a movement or exercise is appropriate for you, please check with you doctor or physical therapist:)
