Hope for Veterans Living With Traumatic Brain Injuries ✨

A study in 2019 showed something truly encouraging for people living with long-term symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other brain issues.

Researchers found that gentle red and near-infrared light therapy using soft LED pads around the head can help improve memory, attention, and even blood flow to injured areas of the brain.

What’s exciting is that these Veterans had been living with symptoms for over 18 months, yet after just 6 weeks of light therapy, many saw meaningful improvements.

Participants showed measurable improvements in memory, processing speed, and attention. Brain scans also revealed increased blood flow in key regions of the brain—something rarely seen so long after a TBI.

This therapy is:✔ Non-invasive✔ Drug-free✔ Painless✔ Rooted in strong, growing research

For anyone who has felt “stuck” in their TBI recovery, it’s uplifting to see new therapies offering possibilities, even years after injury.

Healing doesn’t always happen on a straight line… and sometimes the next breakthrough is something as simple as light. 💡💛

As I find myself in my sixth decade of life, I'm increasingly mindful of the importance of maintaining good health as we age. With the passage of time, many of us may encounter various health challenges, require surgeries to address wear and tear, and experience a decrease in agility and activity levels.

Imagine being able to enjoy optimal health and continue leading a vibrant, active life well into our golden years. That's certainly my goal.

However, I also carry a sense of concern for my future health, particularly given my family history. Both of my parents grappled with debilitating conditions that ultimately impacted their quality of life and independence. My father battled Parkinson’s Disease, while my mother faced the challenges of Alzheimer’s. Witnessing their decline was a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of proactive health management.

With a genetic predisposition to these conditions, I am committed to taking proactive steps to safeguard my health and well-being. From adopting a nutritious diet, engaging in regular exercise and staying mentally active, I believe in the power of prevention and early intervention.

I'm keen to hear from you: What are your thoughts and concerns about your future health? Do you have a plan in place to ensure you remain healthy, active, and engaged as you navigate your own journey into the golden years?

Please feel free to share your insights and experiences in the comments below or reach out to me via DM. Let's inspire and support each other on our quest for lifelong health and vitality!

🎉Cheers to 2024 as a new year! Enjoy each minute of it to the fullest!🎉

The discovery of Nitric Oxide as a major signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system was given the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1998. Polychromatic light therapy increases Nitric Oxide in your body within minutes, resulting in a boost of energy and reduction in pain.

BALANCE AWARENESS WEEK is coming up soon...September 18-24.

There are so many reasons why we can lose our balance and here are a few of them:
- inner ear concerns - vertigo, neuritis, tumours
- brain diseases, head injuries, concussions, PTSD
- hip, knee and foot issues such as fractures, sprains, neuropathies, bunions, plantar fasciitis, joint stiffness and general weakness
- vision changes - new prescriptions can cause vision changes, age related vision issues, blindness
- medications - most medications indicate side effects of dizziness and lightheadedness. Studies have shown that more than 4 medications can put an older adult at a higher risk of falling
- slips and trips for anyone of any age because of environmental conditions, weather conditions, clutter on the floor
- generalized de-conditioning and inactivity post surgery, during and after cancer treatments, and a transition to a sedentary lifestyle.

Vestibular Rehabilitation and Balance Training can be of benefit for many of the factors that affect our balance.

Contact Robynne Smith Physiotherapy if you would like to have a 15 minute free phone consult or if you are ready to set up an appointment for a Balance Assessment.
We can be reached at 306-260-6098, saskbalance@gmail.com or send a message through www.saskbalance.com. We are looking forward to helping you to stay steady on your feet!

WHAT I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT LIGHT THERAPY
PART 3/3 ⚫️ NEAR INFRARED LIGHT

Near Infrared (880 nm) light is beyond the visible spectrum of light so when it is on, it looks black. Near Infrared diodes are not used alone and will be paired with the Red, Blue or both Red + Blue, giving what is known as Polychromatic Light Therapy. The combination of two or more wavelengths of light can enhance each of their benefits.

⚫️ Near Infrared light benefits:
increased nitric oxide production and release
Increased circulation to deeper and larger vessels
Detoxification
Increase in lymph flow
Reduced inflammation
Speeds wound healing on surface and deeper levels
Enhances immune response
Increase angiogenesis (new blood vessels)
Increased release of acetylcholine, promoting parasympathetic response
Increased removal of debris and pathogens
DNA and RNA synthesis
Increased ATP at deeper levels
Increased cellular metabolism
Collagen synthesis
Stimulates new conductive tissues
Reduces fibrous tissue formation
Rebalances and regenerates the nervous system at deeper levels
Pain relief at deeper levels
Osteoblast producing for new both growth and increased bone density

WHAT I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT LIGHT THERAPY
PART 2/3 🔴 RED LIGHT

Red Light (629 nm) Red light is the most commonly known light therapy as you can find red light tanning beds, red light wall size systems, red light caps for heads, and more. Red lights alone can do a lot but when added with NEAR INFRARED lights, the benefits are magnified greatly.

🔴 Red light benefits:
Increase nitric oxide production
Increased peripheral circulation
Increases lymphatic flow
Speeds wound healing of soft tissue
Increases ATP production (increases our energy)
Increase in cellular debris and pathogen removal
Reduces inflammation
Enhances the immune response
Normalizes cell membranes and functions
Increases angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels)
Temperate modulation
Detoxification is enhanced
Decreases c-reactive protein in cancer cells
Pain relief
Increased nerve cell function
Increase nerve cell and axonal sprouting
Increased cell metabolism
Stimulates hair growth/regrowth
Skin issues such as scars, stretch marks, aging

Stay tuned for Part 3 - ⚫️ Near Infrared.

WHAT I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT LIGHT THERAPY
PART 1/3 🔵 BLUE LIGHT

Hi everyone, In the last 2 years my mind has greatly expanded regarding how certain forms of light can help our bodies.

In my long physiotherapy career I have used different modalities for helping people with pain and other conditions such as laser, LED, ultrasound, interferential, heat, ice, etc.

Two years ago a friend told me about a special kind of light therapy that has helped so many people. In my research I spoke with someone who has a long history of using this light systems and the stories she told me of many different health improvements was sounding too good to be true. I did my own due diligence and delved into into various websites as well as scientific research articles on PubMed, and what I found was very promising. I purchased a system and have also seen dramatic changes in my clients in many different wast and some responded in a very short time.

I am sure most of you have heard of light therapy, with red light the most popular as far as I can see. Here is my understanding. There are three main colours of light that can be of great benefit to our bodies: BLUE, RED and NEAR-INFRARED.

Benefits of 🔵 Blue light:

🔵 Blue Light (465 nm) has been used for years for helping with jaundice, but there are many more benefits:
increased nitric oxide production
increase circulation in the skin
Speeds wound healing
Balances the nervous system
Restore and balances liver function and bile flow
Stimulates DNA Telomerase engine to rebuild the protective tips of the DNA stand
Anti-aging, skin issues, skin damage, scar, birthmarks, stretch marks, acne, age spots
Mood disorders
Toenail fungus or fungal conditions of the skin
Thyroid/throat issues
Eradicates MRSA bacteria and certain forms of strep and staph on exposure
Reduces inflammation and speeds healing of herpes lesions
Restores circadian rhythm for better sleep cycles.

Stay tuned for my Part 2 on 🔴 Red light Benefits.
