Say hello to our February VIP, Don N.! 👋

Don has been part of the Elmwood family since the spring of 1992, joining us alongside his brother Richard. He first called Kinsmen Manor home, and in 2024 he moved into his new Community Home as part of the Manor Transition Initiative.

Don loves to stay busy and is always curious about what’s happening around the house. He’s known for his friendly nature - calling everyone “buddy” - and for sharing lots of laughs with both friends and staff. 💖

You’ll often spot Don carrying something with him, whether it’s his notebook or a program from a recent event. And of course, he never says no to a good cup of coffee!

Don’s easygoing, carefree attitude makes him a joy to be around. It doesn’t take much to bring a smile to his face, but nothing beats the moment he sees Santa - he lights up, gives the biggest hug, and smiles from ear to ear! 🎅

Thank you, Don, for always brightening our days and bringing a smile to our faces!

Four years ago, at the beginning of the Manor Transition Initiative, we launched Future Focus - our e‑newsletter designed to keep families, friends, and the entire Elmwood community connected to the journey ahead. The goal was to share what’s next and celebrate what we’ve accomplished together. 💖

Today, we’re proud to reflect on how far we’ve come. Four homes are now open and thriving, with two more on the way. As the initiative nears completion, we’re also looking toward the next exciting chapter in Elmwood’s story: the Community Hub.

Just as we did throughout the Manor Transition Initiative, we’re committed to keeping you informed every step of the way. That’s why Future Focus now includes regular updates on the Community Hub Project, so you can follow along as this vision takes shape. ✨

Residents had a fun-filled getaway to Edmonton at the end of January! 🧳

Holly, Glynn, Orest, Don F., and Laurie - supported by members of our Recreation team - hopped on a plane for two great days in the city. The group stayed at the Fantasyland Hotel, making it easy to explore everything West Edmonton Mall has to offer. From checking out the pirate ship to posing by the Ferrari on display in the mall, there was no shortage of excitement. They even enjoyed a delicious meal on Bourbon Street! 🏴‍☠️🏎

Shopping was a highlight for everyone, with residents picking up brand new Edmonton Oilers gear just in time for the big game. The group scored incredible seats at Rogers Place to watch the Oilers take on the San Jose Sharks. After an intense overtime, the Oilers came out on top, making the evening even more perfect. 🏒

A special surprise made the trip even more exciting for Orest; his brother decided to meet with the group and tag along for an evening! 💖

All in all, it was an awesome trip for everyone! ✨

Ever wondered how Elmwood residents stay so active and involved in so many events and activities? The secret is our incredible Recreation Therapists who lead our Recreation and Community Inclusion Program teams! 💖

February is National Therapeutic Recreation Awareness Month, and we’re celebrating the dedicated professionals who ensure residents and participants are supported, engaged, and meaningfully included every single day.

Last year alone, our Recreation and Community Inclusion Program teams delivered over 750 programs and activities - that’s about two activities every day! From concerts and clubs, to vacations, dinners out, movie nights, shopping trips, and educational programs, this team truly makes anything possible. ✨

Every activity is thoughtfully tailored to the unique needs and interests of each resident and participant. Their creativity, passion, and commitment ensure our community enjoys a rich calendar full of connection and meaningful experiences.

Join us in saying a heartfelt THANK YOU to our amazing Recreation and Community Inclusion Program teams for everything they do! 🫶

Join us in celebrating our first VIP of 2026 - Mary O.! 💖

Mary has been part of the Elmwood family since November 1982, beginning in our Supportive Independent Living Program. In 2015, she made the move to one of our community homes, where she has lived ever since.

A proud sports superfan, Mary never misses a chance to cheer on the Toronto Blue Jays or the Saskatoon Blades. Her room is filled with sports memorabilia and her beloved owl figurines. ⚾🏒

Mary likes to stay connected with friends, family, and the staff at her home. This past year, she reached a big personal goal with support from a grant - purchasing an iPad to keep in touch with her niece in Toronto.

She shares an extra-special bond with Linda, an Elmwood team member who supported her back in her SILP days. Their tradition of celebrating Mary’s birthday with a supper out continues to this day. 🎉

Whether she’s out shopping, getting her nails done, enjoying a treat, or relaxing in her recliner with an iced tea or ginger ale while watching sports, Mary always brightens our day.

We are so grateful to have Mary as part of our Elmwood family! ✨

Our Community Inclusion Program (CIP) will be selling pink shirts again this year, in support of Anti-Bullying/Pink Shirt Day on February 25th. These shirts feature a "Be Kind" design and are available in Youth sizes XS to XL for $20 each and Adult sizes S to 3XL for $25 each. 💕

All shirts are crafted by CIP’s Entrepreneur Group, with proceeds directly benefiting the program. Don't miss out - order your shirt today! Deadline for orders is February 18th. 📅

Did you know Elmwood employs more than 250 people? With a team this size, it’s essential that every new Disability Support Professional (DSP) begins their journey equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and support they need to thrive. ✨

Last year, our Human Resources team partnered with our Resident Supports department to completely revamp our Orientation Training. The goal was to strengthen belonging and engagement, improve clarity and consistency, and ensure a more thorough training experience for all new employees.

A key update is the introduction of a four‑day, in‑house training session, completed before a DSP’s first shift. This approach ensures every new team member begins with the same strong foundation - clear expectations, consistent messaging, and a deeper understanding of their role. The group training environment has also fostered connection, active participation, and a shared commitment to learning. 💖

So far, three cohorts have completed the new Orientation, with our next group beginning in February!

Even with all the festive fun happening in December, the Recreation team made sure the regular favourites didn’t take a holiday! ✨

Here’s a peek at some of the activities residents enjoyed throughout December:

For our first goal post of the year, we are excited to highlight Diana who has been working hard at steadily improving her math skills for over a year. ✨

In her Person-Centred Plan, she set the goal of continuing to build these skills and she has not only met that goal but exceeded it! Almost every day, you’ll find her at her table, working hard on her math sheets.

Thanks to a recent refresh from our Recreation and Community Inclusion Program teams, Diana now has a brand-new set of worksheets to keep challenging herself and growing her skills. 📝

Exciting progress is taking place on Houses #5 & #6, the final two homes in the Manor Transition Initiative! ✨

Residents have been taking drives past the sites to help visualize their future homes and understand the steps involved in developing them. Since their last visit in mid-December, there’s been some big changes - roof trusses are going up! 🏡

In the coming weeks, we’ll see the final trusses installed, along with doors and windows, bringing these houses even closer to becoming homes. 💖

We can’t wait for residents to see the incredible progress during their next scheduled drive later this month! 🚐
