Sometimes a little, Small Change can have a lasting, Big Impact!

The case is true for Movement and Arthritis!!

Stiffness can result with Arthritis, and it has been shown that with more movement it improves overall function and how you feel when dealing with Arthritis.

This great picture demonstrates somethings to keep an eye on.

But it also supports WHAT WE DO - the GLA:D program for both Hip and Knee Arthritis, as well as Back injuries!

Both programs demonstrate that with movement, you can feel better!

Check out the picture for more info, and check out the link below for more info about the GLA:D Program!

Bringing in an to round out the week!
Let's Try the Hip 90/90 stretch!

Purpose:
This is a great exercise to increase your hip mobility. Hip internal rotation is especially important for walking, running, squatting, and getting in and out of the car. Moving the hip through full range of motion is great for overall joint and cartilage health!

Setup:
Sit on the floor with your knees bent up. You can use a mat to make it more comfy!
Note - picture showing is the end position!

How to perform:
Let one leg slowly drop out to the side while your other leg drops inwards. Your legs should look like two 90° angles.
Then, smoothly bring your legs back to the starting position and then let them fall to the other side.
To increase the range of hip internal rotation, try gently turning your trunk towards the leg that dropped inwards.

Modifications:
For people with more limited range of motion, this position might be hard to get into or feel pinchy in the hips. Instead, try laying down on your back with your knees bent up and feet wider than shoulder width apart. Slowly allow one leg at a time to drop inwards. This will train hip internal rotation.

Fun Fact!
Did you know that limited hip mobility can sometimes show up in the body as back pain? That is because when there is a limitation in one joint, another joint is forced to compensate (in this case the lumbar spine).

Did you know - you will FEEL better BEFORE you are DOING Better?

Physiotherapy is great to help with supporting the healing of a tissue, but often it will feel better before it is truly fully healed. This is due to how tissues heal.

Tissue will settle down in the initial part of the injury and hurt less, but the long term healing, including strength and function usually takes much longer.

A lot of the time, if physiotherapy is stopped before tissue has fully healed, it is at greater risk of reinjury.

Check out the great Infographic about the importance of tissue healing and sticking with the rehab journey to help with success!!

Let's close the week with an - The Open Book Thoracic Rotation

Purpose:
This is an exercise I recommend for anyone experiencing general upper-back stiffness, difficulty with everyday rotational tasks such as putting on a jacket or reaching for a seatbelt, or ongoing low back pain that is often the result of compensating for limited upper-back mobility. When the upper back moves well, the arms and trunk can rotate more naturally which reduces strain on the low back and hips. This is especially important during the winter months when activities like shoveling snow place a high rotational demand on the spine.

Setup:
Lie on your side on the bed or floor with a pillow under your head for comfort. Bend your top leg and place a pillow or towel between your knees to keep your hips stacked and prevent lower back twisting. Your head should be supported comfortably with your hips stacked and arms straight in front of you.

How to perform:
Keeping your knees together and hips locked, slowly rotate your top arm and upper body toward the floor behind you. Allow your chest and upper back to rotate while keeping your lower body relaxed. Move only as far as comfortable, then pause for a few seconds at the end of the movement. Slowly return back to the starting position with control. Repeat 5-10 repetitions per side.

Modifications:
Bend the elbow if your experience discomfort in the shoulder or chest or modify the angle as needed
Hold the top leg down with your bottom arm if your feel the lower body rotating during the movement
Increase or decrease the amount of hip bending to your comfort level

Our Story

Donald Physiotherapy opened it’s doors in the developing neighbourhood of Stonebridge, in Saskatoon, SK, in November 2014.

This quickly changed within 6 months of opening the doors, to include Michelle joining him. In less than 4 years, the staff has grown to over 10 people, and the physical space has doubled in size.
