Congratulations to Dr. Darren Costain, Orthopedic Surgeon on receiving the Sault Ste. Marie Academic Medical Association (SSM AMA) 2025 Excellence in Local Medical Education Award.

This prestigious award is presented annually to a member who has made a significant contribution to medical education within the Sault Ste. Marie community. Dr. Costain has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the development of medical students, family medicine residents, and other specialists.

Known for his consistent excellence as a preceptor in the Orthopedic Department, Dr. Costain plays a key role in the development of procedural skills, including hands-on instruction in casting and other essential techniques for medical learners.

A hallmark of Dr. Costain's teaching approach is his commitment to continuous improvement. He regularly seeks feedback from learners to refine his teaching methods. A key contributor to Dr. Costain's nomination was a learner who praised his dedication, stating, “I have never experienced an orthopedic surgeon dedicate as much of his own personal time to teaching. Dr. Costain is always keen to teach with regards to any procedural skills and orthopedic principles. He takes the time to teach even when there is no formal expectation of him to do so, and as a learner, it is greatly appreciated.”

In addition to his clinical teaching, Dr. Costain is highly involved in research, particularly in engaging medical students and other learners in local research projects. His efforts in promoting research opportunities have contributed to community learner experience, advancing both medical education and local medical research initiatives.

Through his dedication to fostering a positive learning environment, Dr. Costain continues to have a profound impact on the development of the next generation of healthcare professionals. His efforts to support medical learners, both in clinical and research settings, embody the spirit of excellence that SSM AMA seeks to recognize and celebrate.

Thank you to Dr. Costain, for his outstanding contributions to medical education in our community!

November marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month—a time to deepen understanding, raise awareness, and strengthen our shared ability to support survivors with safety, compassion, and a trauma-informed approach in both our communities and workplaces.

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) occurs when physical, financial, psychological, or sexual harm is inflicted by a current or former intimate partner.

IPV:
• Affects 1 in 3 women globally
• Is associated with chronic physical and mental health conditions that can significantly affect wellbeing
• Accounts for 39% of femicides in Ontario
• Also impacts men, though cases are often underreported due to stigma

At Sault Area Hospital, the Sexual Assault Care Centre/Partner Assault Clinic provides 24/7 trauma-informed medical care, forensic documentation, risk assessments, safety planning, referrals, and compassionate support for individuals experiencing violence.

This month also recognizes Forensic Nurses Week (Nov. 3–9)—an opportunity to honour the dedicated Forensic Nurses at Sault Area Hospital. With specialized clinical training, advanced skills, and medico-legal expertise, these professionals deliver patient-centred care while supporting evidence collection for those affected by violence. Their work is vital in helping survivors begin their journey toward safety, recovery, and healing.

SAH’s commitment to research is reflected in our SAH Strategic Plan (2022-2025) https://sah.on.ca/about/strategic-plan/ and aligns
with our vision and mission. SAH’s Research Program consists of researchers and a research committee with members from key hospital departments and partners from our community. “The purpose of the Research Program is to empower and equip investigators who conduct research activities at SAH to pursue high-impact research that advances patient care and innovation,” says Asad. Over 150 faculty members from NOSM University, Algoma University and Sault College are affiliated with SAH.

“Our Research Program currently supports more than 70 active studies, including clinical trials, observational, quality improvement, and evidence synthesis projects,” explains Asad. Some research activities include an AI initiatives for Indigenous health, Endovascular Thrombectomy for treatment of stroke, and Virtual Home Waiting Room evaluation/metrics. More information about our research program is available on our website: https://sah.on.ca/programs-services/research/

Benefits of research include improvements in treatment options, patient care, health system efficiency, physician recruitment and retention, exploring new funding opportunities, job creation, training for learners and driving health equity and economic development. “Our ultimate goal is to explore becoming a research institute and an academic teaching hospital so we can enhance evidence-based medicine and clinical learning at the hospital,” says, Asad.

Asad has a keen interest in research and in his spare time, he enjoys writing about research topics on social media including LinkedIn, X, Facebook and Instagram. He also has many varied sports interests such as marathon running, soccer, tennis, and competitive swimming.

We take this opportunity to acknowledge Asad’s expertise and welcome his enthusiasm to expand this important work at SAH.

Sault Area Hospital is proud to announce the arrival of the Neurolyser XR High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) system — now available through our Pain Clinic.

This non-invasive, leading-edge technology is most commonly used to treat spinal arthritis and other chronic pain conditions, offering long-lasting relief and faster recovery times. Patients can now access this advanced care locally, without the need for invasive procedures or long travel. Patients are eligible for this treatment with a referral from their primary care provider.

This milestone was made possible through the generous support of the Sault Area Hospital Foundation, whose commitment to funding transformative medical technology continues to improve patient care.

It’s Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week — a global call to action to protect the power of antibiotics and other antimicrobial medications.

When microbes become resistant to treatment, infections become harder to fight and easier to spread. But together, we can slow AMR.
• Use antibiotics only when prescribed
• Practice good hygiene
• Stay up to date on vaccinations — preventing infection helps reduce the need for antibiotics

Small actions make a big difference in protecting the effectiveness of life-saving medications.
