Sault Area Hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging Department remains committed to ensuring the community continues to receive timely and reliable access to breast screening services through the Ontario Breast Screening Program. Our team is actively adding shifts and appointment availability wherever possible to minimize disruption and maintain this vital service.

Thank you for your patience and support as we continue our efforts to deliver exceptional care to the Algoma community.

In partnership with Sault Area Hospital’s Ontario Breast Screening Program, we are working together to ensure our community remains supported during this time. Urgent care needs will continue to be prioritized and will not experience delays. Routine screening appointments will be scheduled at the next available time.

We are in the process of bringing in a new, state-of-the-art mammography unit featuring advanced Tomosynthesis technology. This upgraded system will use low-dose X-rays to produce clearer, more detailed images—helping detect breast cancer early, when it is most treatable. We expect the new unit to be operational in the new year.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we work to enhance this important service for our community.

RSV immunizations are available for those aged 60 and older who meet the provincial criteria. This vaccine significantly reduces the risk of severe disease, hospitalization and even death.

Every year, we see older adults admitted to the hospital with RSV, facing severe outcomes that can often be prevented. These new prevention measures are game-changers, helping us safeguard the health of the most vulnerable in our community.
At Sault Area Hospital, we are offering RSV vaccinations for admitted older adults who qualify. If you are interested in receiving an RSV vaccination and you meet the provincial criteria, please contact your primary care provider or Algoma Public Health to discuss your options.

Together, we can reduce the impact of RSV in Sault Ste. Marie and keep our community safer and healthier. Let’s make this RSV season a little easier for everyone.

In Sault Ste. Marie, the RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) season runs from December to April each year. During the 2024-2025 RSV season, 13 infants and toddlers were admitted to Sault Area Hospital for RSV infections - that means 13 tiny people were struggling to breathe.

In 2024, Ontario rolled out a new product that has been shown to prevent RSV hospital visits and admissions by 80% - in the medical world, we call that a game changer! Beyfortus, an injectable ready-made antibody that fights RSV for up to 6 months, is now available. This injection does not induce an immune response so it can be given to babies as early as their day of birth.

Ontario is funding Beyfortus for all infants under 12 months of age. Babies born at Sault Area Hospital during the RSV season will be offered this injection before they go home. Babies born in 2025 prior to RSV season can receive Beyfortus from their primary health care provider or Algoma Public Health. Talk to your child's health care provider if you are interested in exploring this option. Thank you to everyone in our Women’s and Children’s Health Program for their amazing efforts to protect our littlest people this RSV season!

Ethics and values are an important part of quality care. Every day, health care teams, patients and care givers face complex ethical questions in the delivery of care.

At Sault Area Hospital (SAH), we recognize that differences in values and opinions can arise when making clinical and organizational decisions. Ethical challenges may involve treatment choices, patient autonomy, or how resources are allocated—all of which require careful reflection.

SAH’s Ethics Team provides consultations, education, and support to help navigate these issues. The team includes staff, physicians, administrators, community members, partners, and patient/family advisors.

During Ethics Week, we thank the SAH Ethics Team for their continued work in supporting ethical decision-making across the organization.

Our Virtual Home Waiting Room (VHWR) launched at the end of August 2025 and the pilot phase of the project is now complete!

This service is open from 9 am to 9 pm, however, hours of operation and number of patients seen will vary depending on the volume and severity of patients and physician coverage in the Emergency Department. It is best to register in the morning as the VHWR may close later on in the day.

The VHWR is NOT virtual care. It is an online space that allows patients with eligible non-urgent medical conditions to wait comfortably at home instead of in the Emergency Department.

𝗘𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
You must have one of the following eligible non-urgent medical complaints to join the VHWR:
• Coughs and/or sore throat
• Earache
• Rashes
• Dental pain
• Prescription renewal
• Suture or staple removal
• Minor cuts and scrapes
• Sprains and strains
• Burning with urination

Join the VHWR online via the SAH website – https://shorturl.at/2vcUd

𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱
Once you join the VHWR, staff in the Emergency Department know you are waiting to see a physician. Every 60 minutes, you will receive a live text update detailing your current place in the virtual waiting room, keeping you informed and at ease throughout your wait.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲?
• Avoid Emergency Department crowds
• Convenient for patients and especially parents of young children
• Greater comfort especially during cold/flu season
• Less exposure to germs

Treaties Recognition Week is a time to reflect on the importance of Treaty rights and relationships.

At Sault Area Hospital, we acknowledge that we are on the traditional territory of the Anishnaabeg—specifically Garden River and Batchewana First Nations—and the Métis People. This land, Baawaating, is part of the Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850, which marks its 175th anniversary this year.

This milestone invites us to reflect and reaffirms our responsibility to honour the significance of the Treaty, while recognizing the strength and resilience of the Indigenous communities who continue to shape and enrich the world around us.

We are all Treaty People. By learning about Treaties, we deepen our understanding and strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities. Miigwetch to our Indigenous and Métis partners for sharing this land and their enduring presence.
