At 23 years old, Emily Arbour, a social worker in our Mental Health and Addictions Program, is already making a profound impact in our community. She was recently recognized at this year’s Algoma Visionary Awards, where she received the STRIVE YPG Young Professional of the Year Award of Distinction.
Born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Emily’s passion for supporting others has deep roots in the community she proudly calls home. A Registered Social Worker specializing in addictions, she began her academic journey in 2021 in the Social Service Worker program at Sault College before completing her Bachelor of Social Work at Algoma University. This August, she will take the next step in her education by beginning her Master of Social Work through Renison University College in partnership with the University of Waterloo.
What makes Emily’s journey particularly remarkable is that she built her professional foundation while completing her studies. She began her career with Algoma Family Services, holding three casual roles simultaneously to balance work and school:
• Youth Live-In Treatment Facility - live-in treatment program that blends traditional Indigenous approaches to well-being with western scientific approaches to treat mental health and substance use disorders
• Creating Connections — a domestic violence program for mothers and their children where she facilitated healing-focused sessions that foster healthy living habits and helped families reconnect.
• Supervised Access Program where she supported families navigating complex and sensitive circumstances.
After completing her Bachelor of Social Work in April 2025, Emily joined the hospital as a casual social worker and quickly transitioned into a full-time role as an Addictions Specialist, a testament to her dedication, skill, and commitment to those she serves.
Beyond her professional work, Emily continues to give back. She volunteers as a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, a program close to her heart. She also facilitates Rebound North through Algoma Family Services, a 10-week program for youth aged 12–18 who are navigating addiction and mental wellness challenges. Through this work, she provides harm reduction education, removes stigma, and creates safe spaces where young people feel supported and understood.
Looking ahead, Emily’s goal is to work in a role that supports survivors of sexual assault and sexual violence, continuing her commitment to walking alongside individuals during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
Outside of work, she enjoys staying active, camping, spending time near the water, and travelling with her partner. At home, they share life with their dog and cat.
We are incredibly proud to celebrate Emily’s well-deserved recognition and the difference she continues to make in our community.
