We often remove the impulse and then try to teach inhibition.

Turn-taking isn’t about waiting.
It’s about learning to pause an impulse in the middle of interaction.

If the activity removes the impulse, there’s nothing to inhibit.

Real turn-taking happens when kids want the same thing, the interaction has momentum, and the pause actually matters.

Turn-taking - a skill to develop or a rule to learn to follow?

If you’ve ever said “wait your turn” 20 times in a day, this post is for you.

Many autistic kids know the rule… but they are still learning how to pause before acting.

When we understand the skill behind turn-taking, we stop expecting compliance and start supporting the development of inhibition.

👏 Stay tuned — we will share actionable ways to help kids build this skill in real classroom moments.

If a child makes eye contact, suppresses stimming, and scripts a greeting under adult prompting…

Is that really connection … or is it masking?

& who benefits from that outcome?

For many autistic children, the hardest part of peer interaction is staying regulated while someone else moves, shifts, and exists unpredictably nearby.

If it requires self-suppression, it isn’t connection.

If the regulation strategies keep “failing,” check the ask … don’t blame the effort.

Regulation is often treated like an internal skill.
Something the child should independently do.

…But environments regulate people all the time 🤔

So ask:

What regulatory work is the space, structure, and adults doing — or not doing — that this child is being expected to do alone?

Sometimes the plan isn’t wrong.
The order is.

If executive functioning only shows up when adults control the structure… the skill displayed isn’t executive functioning yet.

Planning, flexibility, and sustained attention in early childhood only grow through meaningful play (worksheets and drills miss the mark here) >> authentic autistic play.

This week, in your classroom or home:
> Offer open-ended materials.
> Stay engaged in the process.
> Teach through curiosity and thoughtful prompts.

What happens when we only count “requests” during adult-set opportunities?

What if the child communicates something else … like a protest or a boundary?

Many kids appear to “struggle” with table work, but what if the problem isn’t the task, but how it’s presented?

These strategies aren’t about compliance, they’re about connection.

Structure sets up the environment so the child can succeed.
Control focuses on managing the child’s behavior.
Those approaches lead to very different outcomes.

Children regulate through structure and become overwhelmed through control. This distinction matters for learning, connection, and long term skill development.

Save this as a lens for designing environments that support autonomy and regulation.
