At Akhanda Yoga we often talk about our holistic and traditional approach to Yoga.

When people hear the word "Yoga" they may only think of a physical practice, of flexible bodies, and contortion type postures.

It is certainly not uncommon to hear people say, "I can't do Yoga because I am not flexible."

Vishva-ji reminds us, "If you're breathing, you can do Yoga!”

At Akhanda Yoga we emphasize this message, that Yoga is a practice truly meant for anyone and everyone, for everyBODY.

We offer a holistic toolkit drawn from ancient wisdom and emphasize a balanced approach that includes a full repertoire of yoga techniques, including:

🔸 Movement or Asana: working with the physical body
🔸 Breathing or Pranayama: working with the energy body
🔸 Sound-work or Mantra: working with the mental body
🔸 Meditation: working with the wisdom body
🔸 Yogic Philosophy: working with the bliss body

Are you ready to experience for yourself the depth of Yoga?

Experience for yourself the multi-facets of Yoga that so beautifully weave together to create harmony and balance on a physical, energetic, mental, emotional, and spiritual level.

Pranayama!
03/19/2021

Pranayama!

Pranayama roughly translates from Sanskrit as “extension of prana (breath/life force)”.

The word “pranayama” is composed of three Sanskrit words –
🌬️ “pra” = first
🌬️ “na” = unit of energy
🌬️ “yama” = guided expansion

It is the practice of guiding and giving direction to the life force energy, the source of our prana, or vital life force. Prana is often assumed to refer just to breath, but its implications are much more grand.

Prana is any source of energy, of giving life force. It is life giving, refreshing, and energy producing. Even though in a pranayama practice we are manipulating and guiding the breath, it is a practice that reaches far beyond our lungs. We are utilizing our breath as a tool to balance our energies, uplift our spirits, and improve our entire being, our entire cosmic energy.

Pranayama is also what makes a yoga practice (specifically an asana practice) unique when compared to any other other movement based activity.

The integration of breathwork makes an asana practice far more dynamic and beneficial than simply moving the body. The body is a sponge for prana and pranayama allows the body to easily soak up and hold onto prana.

The benefits of pranayama are numerous, when practiced alone or in conjunction with a meditation or asana practice.

The post below (Thankyou Leona💗) really resonated with me today. I have been taking Estrogen blocking medication since 2018. In the past six months, I have been experiencing joint pain and stiffness, a side effect of my medication. I AM SO THANKFUL FOR MY DAILY YOGA PRACTICE. I truly don’t know what condition I’d be in (physically, emotionally, or mentally), if not for my Yoga practice.

Do you have estrogen related breast cancer and suffer from joint pain and stiffness from that medication? These medications are SO important in keeping you cancer free. So don't let the side effects interfere with your gaining their life-saving benefits.
Yoga has been shown, in several small clinical trials, to significantly reduce pain and stiffness associated with estrogen blocking medications in breast cancer. Improvements have also been shown in range of motion, functional ability, balance, flexibility, and quality of life in women taking estrogen blockers for breast cancer. And yoga is a simple, non-pharmacologic solution that you can do at your own pace in the comfort of your own home! We can help you get started if you like.
I'll link to the research studies here if you want to read them, and have screenshots in the comments from their discussions!

True

True

During yesterday’s community Satsang, Yogrishi spoke about different types of pain that we experience, one of those being spiritual pain.

Yogrishi describes this spiritual pain, that so many of us experience, as the unhappiness we feel even though we have everything that society says we “should” have:
🔸 Job
🔸 Home
🔸 Car
🔸 Partnership
🔸 The latest gadgets
🔸 The newest fashion
🔸 All the things that are marketed to us that tell us once we acquire it we will then be happy

Beneath all of this material stuff that we acquire we are still seeking, still searching for something.

We’re looking for expansion.

We’re looking to connect with Source.

Our soul is looking to melt, to merge, to unite with the Divine, with Universal Consciousness.

We are each born to experience this expansive state of unity, of connection. We only experience this when we stop searching in the material world for happiness, when we simplify, when we come to stillness, when we unite our soul with the Divine.

That is the meaning of Yoga.

It is to unite, to melt into the infinite (which you might call Divine, God, Universal Consciousness, Higher Self, etc).

This spiritual pain will only cease when you rest in yourself, in your true nature. Life will then take on a beautiful flow and sense of ease, and happiness will abound.
