Leave the cheese grater behind!

Have you ever seen or purchased a foot file that looks like a cheese grater, or an apparatus for zesting a lemon? Leave 'em where they belong!

These are known for going too deep in to the skin, and can remove healthy tissue along with your callus. In compromised folks (ie diabetics, those with peripheral artery disease, neuropathy), this tissue damage can lead to wounds and infections, not to mention can make your calluses worse! These aggressive files cause trauma to the skin, which makes your body think it needs to repair this by growing thicker, harder skin. It's an awful cycle!

Why choose a foot care nurse?

It's not a secret that living rurally means having to travel to access a large number of professional services, especially foot care services! Sometimes seeing a specialist means booking weeks in advance, setting aside a day to travel to the city, and travel being weather-dependent, especially with the weird winter we have been having!

Advanced foot care nurses have advanced training and education that allows us to assist you with a wide variety of foot-related issues and needs. Foot care nurses are able to thoroughly assess and care for your feet, and refer you on to the appropriate professional when concerns arise.

Athlete's Foot 👣

Athlete's Foot is a fungal infection caused by the tinea pedis fungus. It can cause itching or burning sensations, peeling, cracking or scaling on the soles of the feet, and/or blisters, redness, and skin breakdown between the toes.

Symptoms may depend on the type of athlete's foot you have. Different types include:
- Toe web infection
- Moccasin- type infection (bottoms of your feet)
- Vesicular infection (sudden outbreak of blisters; can be anywhere on your feet)

Your family GP or NP is able to diagnose athlete's foot, and may prescribe antifungals, or recommend an OTC treatment.

A few ways to prevent athlete's foot:
- dry between your toes after bathing or swimming
- wear footwear that allows your feet to breathe
- wear clean, dry socks, and change them daily, or more frequently if they're wet
- wear sandals or shoes around public pools, locker rooms, and showers
