Foot Fact Friday!
A special mention to the calf muscle pump that requires about 7 steps to adequately get that blood and lymph fluid moving up and out of your feet and lower legs!

Foot Hygiene

It is easy to neglect our feet, but good foot hygiene is just as important as the rest of our body!

Washing your feet daily with soap and water, drying extremely well (especially between your toes!), and moisturizing to prevent cracking are vital. However, it is also important to never apply lotion between your toes unless it is formulated for this use. Lotion takes a long time to absorb between the toes, and it creates a warm, moist, dark environment - perfect breeding grounds for bacteria! Ask me about PODOExpert ;) It is the only product safe for use under compression stockings and between toes!

Regular foot care including nail trimming and getting rid of calluses, clean socks daily, and checking your feet regularly for cuts or abnormalities also contribute to good foot hygiene.

Reflexology is a fantastic complementary therapy, but it is often misunderstood. It is a methodical, professional therapy delivered by trained professionals; unfortunately no fortune-telling, no poke-and-hope, and no two sessions the same! However, it is your nervous system taking a deep breath and saying, “ahhhhh, finally.”

Boots for the job -

I have trouble finding winter boots that withstand the demands of the ranch and that fit me properly. I have one pair of Muck boots that fit, but don't fit well - uninsulated Muck boots. They don't keep my feet particularly warm, they dig in, and rub on my heels. At least they keep my feet dry? 🤷‍♀️
I will definitely be on the hunt for better boots next winter! If you're a fellow rancher and have found warm boots, with good grip and support that stand up to ranch chores, let me know!

Shoes hurting your feet?

Things to consider: fit and size of your feet, comfort and support, material and quality, sole stiffness, heel height.

- Feet can change shape and size as we age. Buy shoes at the end of the day when your feet are the largest. Ensure you have enough width in the toe box to comfortably step, and there’s an extra 1/2” of space from the end of your big toe to the end of the shoe.
- Pick shoes that are immediately comfortable. You should never have to suffer through a break in period! Look for something with comfortable insoles and good arch support.
- Choose breathable materials like mesh to allow your feet to breathe, which can help prevent odor and fungal infections. Ensure good quality of shoes - no stitching should dig in or be uncomfortable.
- The soles of your shoes should be flexible around the ball of your foot (front 1/3 of the shoe), and more stiff for the other 2/3 of the shoe. The soles should offer good shock absorption.
- Try to keep heel height 1” or under to help reduce pressure on the front portion of your foot.
- Bonus: choose shoes specific for the activity. For example, if you’re running an ultra marathon, you will likely want shoes with a thicker, more cushioned sole, than runners you’d use for casual wear or walking the paths.

Heal To Toe is TWO!

(Actually 2 in December, but then influenza, holidays, cold weather and cattle took over)

I want to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to my family and friends who have supported this dream of mine for the past two years, and all of my clients for making this dream come true. Thank you to my clients, client’s friends, and friend-of-a-friends who have supported my clinic either by visiting me yourself, or referring a loved one to me!

I am truly blessed with the best folks that come to see me and make every clinic day fun, challenging (in the best way), and truly enjoyable. Supporting Heal To Toe is not only supporting my dream of owning and operating a small business, but also supporting my family, too. I am humbled and grateful that I get to continue to provide Shaunavon and area with competent, client-centred foot care and reflexology services in 2026.

Thank you for two awesome years! I can't wait to see what year 3 bring for Heal To Toe!

Should I soak my feet before having foot care?

I frequently have clients ask if they should soak their feet before coming to see me, or why I’m not soaking their feet first “like when I get a pedicure?”

The short answer is this: it is not best practice. Accurate assessment and treatment of your feet requires dry, intact skin.

Skin that’s been soaked can make it more difficult to tell the difference between healthy and compromised skin, and makes it difficult to distinguish early wounds, fissures, or infection. Macerated skin from soaking is more fragile, and more prone to tearing if injured, which can be dangerous for clients with diabetes, vascular disease, or immunocompromise.

I promise you don’t need to soak your feet before a treatment. I have the tools to trim those tough nails and get through the thickest of calluses. Softened calluses are far more difficult to reduce than hard ones! RN-provided foot care is an evidence-based practice, and follows best practice guidelines to keep you and your feet safe!
