Do you know how diabetes can affect your feet?
There are many ways that diabetes may impact your feet, but having high or uncontrolled blood sugar can take a big toll!
- Neuropathy (numbness, tingling, and/or pain). With decreased sensation, you may be more prone to injuring your foot without realizing it, which can lead to other issues as outlined below.
- Foot deformities. Nerve damage can lead to conditions that cause a change in the shape of your foot (for example, charcot foot). Other issues that may arise include skin dryness, calluses, cracks, hammer toes.
- Decreased circulation. This can make it difficult for injuries, wounds, or even infections to heal.
- Increased risk of infection. If you develop a wound, or become injured without realizing it, a wound can worsen quite quickly. Minor cuts can become infected and quickly spread.
The way diabetes affects each person varies, but it's always important to have your feet checked regularly to ensure they are as healthy as possible!
