While we can’t control the food shaming comments that are bound to arise during large family gatherings, we can always control how we respond to them. Go in armed with some of these helpful retorts and don’t be shy to SHUT DIET TALK DOWN. Don’t let the Diet Grinch steal the joy from your holiday season.

If you're counting and tracking everything you eat, it might be affecting you in ways you haven't even thought of.

I’d have a ton of money if I had a dime for every time I saw some MLM nutrition person or supplement company or influencer talk about ‘how to control hunger’ to lose weight.
What? ABSURD.
If you’re HUNGRY, you need to EAT. THAT IS ALL.
And newsflash: NO MATTER WHAT YOU WEIGH, YOU STILL DESERVE TO EAT.
We’re supposed to control hunger with food, not sprays, diet pills, or lollipops (eff you, Flat Tummy Co).
If your body is asking to be fed, you should honour that request, just like you do with any of the other internal cues you’ve been born with (like peeing, pooping, etc).
As the weather gets warmer, people who perpetuate harmful behaviours like ignoring hunger to lose weight, will be all over social media.
I recommend unfollowing anyone who promotes this sort of thing, and scrolling right by it when you see it anywhere else.

The UK Foresight report identified over 100 different factors that influence our weight, confirming what we’ve known for a very long time but conveniently choose to ignore - deliberately manipulating weight is the opposite of ‘simple’.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Telling people to just eat less and move more is like telling a poor person that they should just spend less and save more. Congratulations! You’ve just solved poverty 🙄.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Even that facetious analogy falls flat, because your body weight is not something to ‘fix’. That might sound strange seeing as diet culture rams that supposed logic down our throats on a daily basis, but it’s true. EVEN IF our body weight is having an impact on our health (because yes, that is possible), intentionally trying to manipulate it isn’t your only option. I mean, thank f**k for that because it’s neither reliable not risk-free.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instead, focus on actual health-promoting behaviours. Reminder: weight-loss is not one of them. Better sleep quality, exercise, improving nutrition, social interaction, not smoking, less alcohol... all of those will improve your health irrelevant of size. You may not be in a place right now whether you have the capacity to focus on any of those either - that’s fine too. Health shaming, fat shaming... I have no time for any sort of stigmatising attitudes here. But for those of you who feel you have the capacity for change, remember that weight-loss is not the answer it’s been sold to you as.

Happy New Year!🎉💫

Happy New Year!🎉💫

2020 was hard for a multitude of reasons. The insidious one was how weight stigma became popular again as BMI correlations (not causations) were used to justify discrimination. As a result, the cyclical new year weight loss advertising have even more emotional manipulation than usual. Don’t fall for them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you want your new year resolution to include improving your health, that’s great! However, the least reliable way of doing that is by trying to deliberately manipulate your weight.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Focus on the other things that are actually reliable indicators... better sleep, reducing alcohol, getting more fruit and veg, regular exercise... all of those are guaranteed to improve your health, irrelevant of what happens to the number on the scales. No word of a lie.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Losing weight is not your life’s purpose, no matter how aggressively diet culture tells you it is. Save this post and remind yourself of it daily. Send it to a friend. Make it your wallpaper. Don’t let anyone dissuade you of its truth and importance.
