Back in the 90s, safety performance was all about lagging KPIs.
You waited for an incident, did an audit, found the mistake, fixed it…

and then repeated the cycle all over again.

It told us what went wrong but we never looked at the why.
Today, the conversation has evolved.

We’re focusing on leading indicators that show us the risks, patterns, and gaps as they’re happening before more damage is done.

This proactive approach is helping organizations understand the conditions that create incidents, not just count them after the fact.

What if safety couldn’t answer the safety questions—would your organization pass this test?

In our upcoming podcast, Better Safe Than Sorry, launching in 2026, Jill shares one of the ways they vet contractors at EPCOR. During the interview process, she doesn’t allow the safety team to answer the safety questions. Instead, she asks operational managers to respond.

Not because the safety people lack knowledge but because true safety ownership lives with operations.

It’s a powerful lesson and a clear indicator of where an organization sits on its health and safety journey.

🎙️ If insights like this resonate with you, our new podcast dropping in January takes an even deeper dive into contractor safety management.

ISO and COR validate your processes BUT they don’t guarantee your processes are effective.

They both check your systems to see if you're actually doing what you say you’re doing.

But it doesn't answer the more important question: Are you doing the RIGHT things?

In the first episode of our new podcast Better Safe Than Sorry, dropping in January, we take a deeper dive into COR and IS and their role in contractor management.

Not every organization has the capacity to manage contractors, prime responsibilities, and admin-heavy project oversight. It requires time, bandwidth, and a strong administrative backbone which is something many owners simply don’t have in-house.

That's where large contractor companies step in and take on those roles. They’ll assume prime contractor responsibilities, manage the project, and sub out the right work to reliable contractors.

So, if your organization doesn’t have that capacity, there are options. And there are companies that are designed to fill that gap.

We dive deeper into this on our upcoming podcast launching in January.

When you’re new to the industry, you expect training… not horror stories.

But as an environmental consultant, sometimes the first lesson you get is everything that went wrong on past sites so you don’t repeat the same mistakes.

And honestly?
Those stories stick.
They shape how you see risk, responsibility, and the impact of cutting corners.

This is the kind of real talk we’re diving into on the podcast which drops in January 2026. Subscribe to our YouTube channel to get notified when episodes come out: https://www.youtube.com/
