I was looking into licensing our newish puppies and discovered that Strathcona County has new dog bylaws AND the Strathcona County Library has a microchip scanners available! Very cool! Kudos to the county - this is a great program! I highly recommend everyone borrow a microchip scanner (or come to the clinic to have your pets' chips scanned) and ensure their pet's chip is present and that the information is correct (you can update your information on the website of the microchip). We primarily use EIDAP microchips so if you're one of our patients go to https://www.eidap.com/
Here's the details from the Strathcona County website.
Responsible Dog Ownership Bylaw changes made in 2024:
Effective April 1, 2024 dog owners in Strathcona County will no longer be required to purchase an annual dog license.
February 13, 2024, Council approved Responsible Dog Ownership Bylaw amendments that replace the license requirement with the requirement that dogs wear visible identification on a collar or harness beginning April 1, 2024. The Dog ID must include the ownerโs current phone number. (Some exceptions apply, but failure to comply can result in fines.)
Microchips and tattoos increase the likelihood of reuniting you with your pet. Microchip scanners are available at the Strathcona County Library. Card holders can borrow one of five scanners to check an animal for a microchip, to check if a petโs chip is working or to ensure the petโs information is updated. Visit sclibrary.ca/kits for more information.
