Fun Fact Friday 💪🦴

Since we’ve been on the topic of shoulders this week… here’s your fun fact! 👇

Did you know?
The rotator cuff does more than just rotate the shoulder. 💪🏻

Its main role is actually to help stabilize the shoulder joint, keeping the head of the upper arm bone centered in the socket during movement.

The rotator cuff is made up of 4 important muscles:

• Supraspinatus
• Infraspinatus
• Teres Minor
• Subscapularis

✨ Fun Shoulder Facts:

• The supraspinatus is the most commonly irritated rotator cuff tendon
Often strained by repetitive overhead movement, posture changes, or poor shoulder mechanics.

• Not all rotator cuff pain means a tear.
Tension, inflammation, compensation patterns, posture, or referred pain can all mimic rotator cuff symptoms.

Healthy shoulders depend on more than mobility, they need strength, stability, and whole-body balance too.

Mindful Body Reminder 🌿
Shoulder discomfort isn’t always just about the shoulder itself. Neck tension, upper back mobility, posture, and body mechanics all play an important role.

Shoulders have definitely been a theme in the clinic lately… 👀

Maybe it’s spring gardening 🪴👩‍🌾 getting back into sports ⛳️🏌🏻‍♂️or simply how our bodies are adapting to seasonal activity changes🌿🌷🌞☔️

One of the most important things I often explain to patients:

The same shoulder pain or symptoms can present very similarly, but the root cause may be completely different from person to person.

In Osteopathy, we don’t just focus on the shoulder itself….
The shoulder is incredibly mobile and relies heavily on surrounding structures for support, including:

• Cervical spine (neck)
• Upper thoracic spine (“upper T-line”)
• Ribs
• Shoulder blades
• Muscles, fascia, and nerve pathways
• Even opposite hip and full-body compensations

Because of this, treatment often looks different for each patient depending on how their whole body is functioning.

Common shoulder-related concerns people seek support for:

• Tight, achy shoulders
• Rotator cuff irritation
• Frozen shoulder
• Tendon irritation
• Thoracic outlet tension
• Numbness or tingling
• Radiating arm discomfort

✨ Osteopathy works to support the body as a whole, helping improve motion, balance, and overall function.

Sometimes the shoulder is the symptom… not the true source.

Sympathetic vs. Parasympathetic 🌿

Or you might of heard of “fight or flight” or “rest and digest” !? - Our bodies are constantly shifting between these two states

✨ When we’re in sympathetic mode, the body is on high alert, heart rate up, muscles tense, digestion slows… everything is focused on “getting through.”

✨ When we shift into parasympathetic mode, the body can finally soften, breathing deepens, digestion improves, tissues relax… this is where true healing happens.

In manual osteopathic treatment, one of our main goals is to gently guide your body into this calmer state.

Because when your body feels safe…
it stops resisting and starts receiving! 💫

🌿 We support this by:
• Encouraging slow, mindful breathing during treatment
• Working with areas like the sacrum and cranium, where parasympathetic activity is supported
• Creating a calm space with soft lighting, quiet music, and a peaceful environment

Healing doesn’t come from forcing the body.

It comes from creating the right conditions for it to unwind.

Come unwind with us at Mindful Body Osteopathy 🌿

Feeling tight, achy, or just not like yourself? 🌿

Osteopathy is a gentle, hands-on approach that supports the body’s natural ability to heal and rebalance.

Many people come in for:
✨ neck & shoulder tension
✨ low back discomfort
✨ headaches
✨ general stiffness or feeling “off”

Do your joints feel worse on rainy spring days?🌧️🌿
You’re not imagining it..

Warmer days are starting to peek through… but with the ups and downs in temperature, damp air, and rainy days, many people notice their joints feeling more stiff or achy this time of year.

Here’s why:

1️⃣ Changes in air pressure can affect joint sensitivity
Fluctuations in barometric pressure (common with rain and storms) may slightly influence the tissues around joints—making them feel more sensitive or achy.

2️⃣ Dampness can make tissues feel heavier or stiff
Cool, rainy weather can reduce circulation slightly and leave muscles and fascia feeling less responsive and a bit sluggish.

3️⃣ Temperature swings challenge the body to adapt
Warm one day, cold the next—your body is constantly adjusting, which can lead to temporary tightness or discomfort.

4️⃣ Less consistent movement on rainy days
We often move less when it’s grey and wet outside, which can contribute to stiffness—especially in the spine, hips, and knees.

🌿 Spring aches are often about environmental changes, not damage.

Gentle movement, staying warm, and keeping your body moving regularly can help support ease through the seasonal shift. 🤍

The early signs of spring are starting to appear here 🌿

Longer days, A little more sunshine, Temperatures slowly warming.

This time of year often brings a gentle shift in energy. After months of winter, many people feel the pull to move a little more, going for walks, getting outside, or beginning some spring cleaning at home.

It can also be a nice moment to check in with yourself and revisit the intentions you set at the start of the year.

Not with pressure — just with curiosity.

What small habits or routines help you feel your best?

As the seasons change, your body is adapting too. Supporting movement, mobility, and balance can help make that transition feel easier.

Here’s to a slow and steady transition into spring. ☀️🌷

✨Fun Fact Friday 🦴

Ligaments don’t create movement, they guide and support it.

In the spine and pelvis, ligaments act like gentle guide-ropes, helping maintain stability while still allowing the body to move safely and efficiently.

Here’s a question patients often ask:

Ligaments attach bone to bone.
Tendons attach muscle to bone.

Both are important for healthy movement they just have different roles.

✨One spinal ligament is especially unique:
The ligamentum flavum is naturally elastic.
It stretches and recoils with movement, helping the spine bend and straighten smoothly between vertebrae.

Your body is designed with both flexibility and support built in.

✨ Mindful Body Note - Stability doesn’t mean stiffness it means support.

🦴 📚 Fun Fact Friday

Your lumbar vertebrae (L1–L5) are the largest bones in your spine, built to support body weight and allow powerful, functional movement.

🦴Facet joints
Each lumbar vertebra connects to the one above and below through small facet joints.
These joints:
• Guide movement
• Limit excessive twisting
• Provide stability while still allowing motion

They’re a big reason your low back is strong and steady, not meant for extreme rotation.

🥏Intervertebral discs
The discs between each vertebra aren’t just cushions they’re made of multiple layers of strong, flexible tissue designed to absorb load.

Fun disc facts:
• Each disc has many concentric layers (like rings of a tree)
• Healthy discs can tolerate significant compressive force
• Gentle movement helps draw in fluid and nutrients, they thrive on motion

✨The spine is designed for strength, support, and movement — not rigidity.

Structure supports function — but movement keeps tissues healthy.
