We’ve revamped our look but our mission of helping you build resilience and thrive in life remains.

Today we’re proud to officially launch the Hughes Counselling brand and website.

Hughes Counselling was built on a simple belief: therapy isn’t about fixing what’s broken - it’s about training for life.

Founded by Hal Hughes, a former first responder turned Registered Psychotherapist, our practice supports individuals, couples, families, and frontline professionals across Ontario with practical, evidence-based care rooted in truth, resilience, and steady progress.

Our new logo reflects this philosophy. It weaves together symbols of strength, resilience, and growth - the wolf's intuition, the mountain's climb, and bamboo's flexibility. It's a visual reminder that healing isn't about becoming unbreakable; it's about building the inner strength to face whatever comes.

On our new website, you can:

✔ Learn about our approach
✔ Explore our services
✔ Meet our professional team
✔ Discover Hal’s speaking events & workshops
✔ Access educational resources
✔ Book your first session

If something in your life feels heavy right now, you don’t have to carry it alone.

Visit the new site and take the first step when you’re ready: www.halhughes.com

Make gratitude a verb.

Make it an intentional practice rather than a passive feeling. The practice of gratitude shifts our HABIT of focusing on what is missing, negative, or what may go wrong… back to the present moment and what is right. When we change this habit, we can start to see sparks of light, even in the darkest of times.

Take two minutes today to reach out to someone you value and tell them your appreciation. But do it in a way that they really feel it. Make gratitude an action.

Seeking support is not weakness, it is wisdom.

Our instinct to form tribes is written into our DNA, the same biological wiring that has allowed humans to survive, despite being physically less adapted than most animals. Connection regulated stress, shared knowledge, and protected survival long before modern society existed.

Choosing therapy is a return to that original alignment: acknowledging that healing, growth, and resilience happen best in collaboration. We were never meant to do this alone.

At Hughes Counselling, Hal practices the philosophy that physical health forms the foundation for all aspects of wellbeing. When the body is supported through strength, movement, and care, the mind gains greater capacity for clarity, resilience, and emotional balance. Longevity and vitality are not separate from healing, but essential to living a full and meaningful life.

Hal is a product of this approach himself, embodying it through his commitment to endurance and resilience as an ultramarathon runner.

Our new website is coming soon, this is just the beginning.

What if during challenging times in life we do not necessarily need more rest and recovery, but should actually be doing even harder things??

There is a type of stress called hormesis. These are stressors that release chemicals within our body that act as antidepressants and turn on longevity genes. These stressors build psychological resiliency and better equip us to navigate other challenges in our life.

Exercise, fasting, heat exposure (sauna), and cold exposure (ice baths), are 4 of the best stressors we can engage with.

Doing these uncomfortable things are difficult in the moment, but set us up physiologically and psychologically to better rise up to the challenges of life.

This is on the wall at Hughes Counselling.
What does it mean, and how does it apply to therapy?

Being prepared for life requires the spirit of a warrior.
Life can be hard, unfair, and even tragic.
Part of therapy is in helping to learn and engage in the daily practices that can allow us to feel that we are on sure footing, despite what battle we are facing in our lives.
How are your practices preparing you?

What do you value?
Like a compass needle guided by an invisible force, so too are our lives by the values we hold.
In psychotherapy we often help our clients clarify what they need to value most in order to move past adversity, or to create a better life for themselves.
The problem is that we often do not align our daily habits and rituals with the values we think we hold. We find time for that which we truly value.
Again….what are your values?
And are your behaviours truly in alignment with them?
Life is hard, and without clarity on our values, we can easily be influenced by things that take us off course.
