There’s a common misunderstanding about what it means to be “alpha.”

It’s not ego. Not dominance. Not being the most aggressive person in the room.

Real alpha is responsibility.

Response-able.
Able to respond to life with clarity, groundedness, and care.

It’s the one who watches over the group.
The one who stays steady when things get hard.
The one who makes sure everyone is okay, not just themselves.

That’s what I’m reminded of being here.
Nature doesn’t reward noise. It rewards awareness, presence, and responsibility.

And that’s what counselling is about too. Helping people become more response-able. More capable of handling life, taking care of themselves, and showing up for the people they love.

That’s real leadership.
That’s real strength.
That’s real alpha.

Same s**t sandwich. Different day.

We do this more than we admit, repeating the same choices, same habits, same patterns… then wonder why nothing changes.

If you don’t set your own principles. Clear rules for how you think, act, and decide: you’re just packing the same lunch every day and hoping it tastes different.

Change the ingredients. Change the outcome.

Waking up and hoping to feel well is not a strategy.

We tend to think the way we feel in our physiology.

Starting the day with a series of habits and rituals that flood our system with good internal chemistry is not extremism…. It is wisdom.

Priming our day with things like exercise, sauna, meditation, and limiting early screen time, can help send us into the day feeling prepared.

This is about showing our mind who is in charge.

This is about creating conditions that support balance, longevity, and energy.

How are you priming the start of your day?

Imposter syndrome can make it hard to recognize your own abilities, even when there’s clear evidence of your competence.

You might find yourself explaining away your success, doubting your skills, or worrying that others will see you as “not good enough.”

Over time, this can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and feeling like you always have to prove yourself.

These patterns are more common than many people realize, and they can be worked through with the right support.

It feels like people and things are upsetting us.

Perhaps the hardest but most important truth we need to come to is this; it is not what happens that determines our emotions. It is what we expect, believe, and think about what happens that determines our emotions.

It is an inside job!

Once we realize this we can get to work on the real project..... using our mind in a way that ensures our inner world is usually in a state of peace and balance.

One way to protect that peace is to get our expectations in alignment with reality.

Recently, my daughter offered me a theory:

Anger is not always the primary emotion. It often functions as a secondary response. Like an iceberg, only a small portion is visible, while much more remains beneath the surface.

Hurt that has not been acknowledged.
Loss that has not been processed.
Fear that has not felt safe to express.
Frustration that feels overwhelming.

From a psychological perspective, anger can serve a protective role. It is often more socially acceptable and easier to access than emotions that involve vulnerability or discomfort.

When we take the time to identify and understand the underlying emotion, it can shift how we respond. Increased awareness allows for more accurate emotional expression and can reduce the likelihood of harm to ourselves and others.

Recognizing anger as a signal rather than the root emotion creates space for more effective and constructive ways of coping.

Stress isn’t something to eliminate, it’s something to learn how to move through.

Here are a few strategies that can help you come back to yourself when things feel overwhelming.

Counselling is more about remembering who we are, than it is fixing what is broken.

The belt system in martial arts is a metaphor for life. We all start out as white belts; unfettered and full of hopes and dreams.

Then life happens.

Pain, struggles, and even trauma. Our belts get dirtied and become brown, or even black. But as in fighting, in life if you embrace the battle and march forward, your black belt can wear through to reveal another white belt. You can get back to who you were born to be.

Sometimes when we are in the darkest place we are actually closest to the light.
