Get to know Riley Smith, from Charlottetown, who has joined us here at the Seaside Medical Center for the past 8 weeks.
Here is your Seaside 6:
1. Can you tell us what school you attend and how far along you are in your medical training?
I am currently attending Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where I am in my third year of medical school. I am expected to graduate in the spring of 2027.
2. What was it that drew you to medicine and made you say “this is what I want to do with my life?”
There is no single reason that drew me to medicine. The first that comes to mind is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in someone’s life. I am also drawn to the depth and complexity of the field, as well as the lifelong learning it demands.
3. Outside of school and work, what do you like to do for fun?
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family. I also enjoy running outdoors, golfing, and watching the NHL.
4. When you picture yourself 10 years from now, what does that look like, do you have a specialty in mind or a particular vision for your career?
Although it is difficult to predict given the constantly evolving healthcare system and changing patient needs, I have always envisioned myself working in the operating room. I am particularly interested in a procedural career that allows me to provide patients with definitive treatment.
5. Based on your education and experience so far, what is one change you would encourage our audience to make that could dramatically improve their overall
health?
If you're able to, there is great value in a daily 20–30 minute walk.
6. And finally, you have had the privilege of working closely with Dr. Tom Bronaugh here at Seaside - what is the most valuable lesson you have taken away from that experience?
Over the past eight weeks working with Dr. Bronaugh, I have gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of building strong patient relationships. I was particularly struck by how well he knew his patients, both medically and personally. His authenticity in forming these relationships allows him to recall key aspects of their care.
Thanks so much Riley for taking the time to answer, and good luck on all your future endeavors!
