I did & could not be more ECSTATIC with the Speed, Service, Result & Cost Savings! June 2016
Fed up with WAITING for Hip Replacement Surgery in Edmonton, AB. I decided to explore my options throughout Canada the USA and Mexico. After an exhaustive study of surgery options, available locations, timing and costs, I met with my surgeon in Edmonton to get his input and respected opinion as to the viability of moving forward. (He had performed my first hip replacement surgery12 years ago.) Interestingly, he was very forthcoming, understanding and had just one question - - - HAVE YOU CHECKED OUT YOUR OPTIONS IN MEXICO? He suggested there are many very competent, American-trained surgeons in Mexico who are VERY reasonable in terms of cost. Additionally, he suggested the hospitals and post-care practitioners were world class. July 14, 2016
After contacting a number of surgeons throughout Mexico, my son (who lives and works in Guadalajara) came across the surgeon I ultimately chose to proceed with. I initiated contact with the surgeon in mid-July and very quickly received some information from his foreign patient coordinator, Lori. Based on this information, and a need for further detail, we connected by telephone and set a time for the surgeon and coordinator to contact me by telephone.
* Both surgeon and patient coordinator speak fluent English. I received a call the following Saturday that lasted over one hour. During the conversation ALL my questions were answered, the timing and process was completely explained and I was promised a number of referral contacts. (Referrals were received the next day.) We concluded by discussing possible surgery dates, beginning as early as the first week of August 16. After contacting three referrals, my wife and I decided to move forward on an August 27/2016 Surgery date. August 21 - August 26, 2016
Arrived Guadalajara, to attend various pre-op medical and dental appointments as a prerequisite to confirm I was fit for surgery.
*We rented a condo for our stay
* All appointments were set up by Lori, the patient coordinator.
* All of the doctors were fluent in English. August 25/2016 - Meeting with Surgeon to confirm I was fit for surgery and confirm operation time. August 27/2016 - Check into hospital at 7 AM for surgery at 9 AM

August 28/2016 - Transported back to condo by ambulance
* Part of package provided by the surgeon

August 29/2016 - Physical Therapy starts
* Therapist attended at my condo each day, as a part of the package provided by surgeon

August 30/2016 - First extended walk outside of condo.
* One crutch for stability

September 1/2016 - Out for the evening with my wife, son and his girlfriend
* One crutch for stability
* Could have used a cane; preferred crutch

Sept 9/2016 – Follow-up appointment with surgeon to remove staples and provide go ahead for departure back to Canada, two days early. September 11/2016 - Flight Guadalajara to Edmonton through Houston

My goal in setting up this page is to promote the Doctor, his coordinator and the incredible experience I received throughout this entire process.

* I have spoken specifically about my experience with hip replacement surgery but the Doctor is very adept at all orthopedic surgery and/or can recommend colleagues for specific surgeries he does not perform.
* Lori, the foreign patient coordinator, works with a number of different Surgeons and Dentists in various practices and will work directly with anyone who would like to eliminate the pain of waiting. PLEASE CONTACT ME WITH ANY AND ALL QUESTIONS YOU HAVE REGARDING THE OVERALL PROCESS. FROM THERE, IF YOU WANT TO GET MORE DIRECT INFORMATION OR POTENTIALLY MOVE FORWARD, I WILL CONNECT YOU DIRECTLY WITH LORI WHO WILL BECOME YOUR DIRECT CONTACT FROM THAT TIME ON.

* Because of the ever-increasing demand for surgery outside of Canada, and the costs for Lori to deal with people long distance, I have volunteered to be an intermediary and provide as much detail as possible up front. I look forward to your inquires and to connecting you to their Amazing Medical Concierge to walk you through the process and take care of virtually everything for you. Gord

Rose Bazinet's Story:

My entire experience was very positive, everything happened as scheduled, with no surprises along the way. I was very pleased with all people involved, Doctors, hospital staff, Lori, physio etc., everyone was very attentive, professional and polite.

September 2016 - My son, a colleague of Gordon Williams, learned about Gordon’s hip replacement in Mexico, the success of the procedure, and how pleased Gordon was with his experience. Knowing that I was on the list for a replacement, he encouraged me to contact Gordon and speak with him.

I had a chat with Gordon and after our conversation, I also was impressed with his story and wanted more information. He introduced me to Lori, the international patient coordinator, in Guadalajara.

After exchanging many emails, she set up a telephone conversation with herself, the surgeon and myself for
November 7, 2016. I felt very comfortable with our discussion and decided to move forward, choosing January 2017 for my hip replacement.

January 2, 2017 : arrived in Guadalajara, Lori had arranged our transportation to and from the airport.

January 3, 2017 : all pre-operative tests, xrays, dental check were completed. Lori arranged all the appointments.

January 6, 2017 : 5 pm Appointment with Surgeon to discuss operation details and confirm a date for surgery.
7 pm Admitted to hospital to be prepared for surgery next morning.

January 7, 2017 : 9 am Operation of hip replacement.

January 9, 2017 : First Physio session while still in hospital, later discharged and transported back to condo. Physiotherapy continued daily, coming to my residence.

Used walker for first week, then moved to cane second week and learned to do stairs. Once I was comfortable with stairs, I went for daily walks outside.

January 23, 2017 : Follow-up appointment with Doctor. He was very pleased with my progress and mobility. Staples were removed and incision was nicely healed.

January 25, 2017 : Return flight home.

In closing, I was placed on the Edmonton Hip & Knee Clinic’s waiting list spring of 2016. I have yet to be called. I am very happy with my decision to have my surgery done in Mexico, now I am moving forward with my life planning activities that were on hold due to my pain and limited mobility.

Below is the story for one of the gentlemen that referred me to the Dr. that did my hip replacement surgery in Mexico.

My Dual Hip Replacement Story - Mark Nash

Around 2012, I began having measurable hip discomfort, especially when on my feet for long hours, and over the next 2 years the pain and discomfort increased substantially.

By 2014, I was only able to walk with crutches otherwise I used a wheelchair.

An X-RAY demonstrated degeneration in both hips and Stem Cell therapy was recommended. The stem cell procedure provided some minor relief for about 2 months, after which my condition reverted to the way it was before.

The most difficult things were not sleeping and not being able to accomplish the simplest of tasks including putting on my own socks.

Hip replacement surgery seemed to be the next step, however I do not have medical insurance nor a large bank account, so I began the tedious task of looking at the variety of orthopedic options here in the USA.

During my search I found the newer types of surgery, including the anterior (front) entry and anterior-lateral, (side) entry, seemed to have better success with a much shorter recovery period.

As a part of much search, I investigated Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Jordan, Israel, Europe in general, Hungary and Mexico.
Ultimately, Hungary and Mexico were at the top of the list.

After substantial research, based on the information I found regarding results, lack of problems, overall reputation and cost (more or less in that order) I made my decision to go to Mexico.

I contacted Lori Payne, the English-speaking liaison for the doctor I had chosen in Guadalajara Mexico. With Lori’s help I began digging deeper into the process and requirements necessary. Lori was absolutely wonderful to work with. In fact, Lori even coordinated a telephone call with the Surgeon who was totally open to answer all my questions.

* I needed both hips replaced and it was agreed to do both at the same time if I was healthy enough.

Once confirmed, I booked my flight, booked a very nice hotel, scheduled my pre-surgery exams (cardiac and dental) and lit out for Guadalajara.

Fortunately, Lori walked me through each step making it simple and efficient.
I must say that I was truly amazed at a couple of things.
• First the service attitude of every person I met far exceeded my experience with the USA.
• Second, the standard of the facilities was top of the line.

Ultimately, we decided to perform the surgeries 2 weeks apart rather than at the same time.
In both cases I was in the hospital only 1 night and in both cases I was up and walking 6 or 7 hours after surgery.

Physical therapy, was arranged through the Dr. and started immediately for 2 weeks following each surgery
By 6 weeks post surgery, I was walking 3 miles each day. After 2 years in a wheel chair, that was wonderful.

For me, cost was a major consideration. My total bill for absolutely everything, air fare, hotel, food, Uber around town, all medical pre-surgery, surgery and post surgical fees, nothing left out was about $22,000 US.

Here in my hometown, just the surgery would be about $33,000 per hip, not including hospital, therapy, medication, etc.

The biggest bonus for me was the fact Guadalajara was a pleasure, with lots of history, great food, and wonderful people.

If I can help anyone, they are welcome to contact me via email (marknash7@gmail.com) and I will be happy to answer any questions I can.

Thank you Lori Payne for the great care and guidance through this process and to Gord Williams for the thoughtfulness to want to help others discover this superb option for orthopedic surgery, by producing this site.

If my wife or sister needed orthopedic surgery, I would not hesitate to refer them to Lori and the great team of Surgeons she works with.

Most sincerely,
Mark Nash
