So you got in with an OB or midwife! Yay!

1st follower

But you don’t know anything about them - here are 3 questions we love to ask and why- and what they might be telling your about your care provider…

1. Timeline for talking about induction methods- if you are hoping for an unmedicated birth and you want to trust in your body and baby’s timing then discussing induction around 37 weeks “just in case” you haven’t had baby by 40 weeks isn’t supportive.

😬 discussing induction before it’s really needed (medically indicated or beyond the SOGC (Canada) recommended 41-42 weeks gestation ) can increase anxiety, and not be supportive for spontaneous labor. If your care provider tells you that they bring this topic up at 36-38 weeks it may be worth it to see if that truly aligns with your birth desires!

2. Their opinion on doulas- whether you plan to hire one or not- your care providers thoughts/ opinions on doulas can say a lot about how they view this space. Doulas are non medical professionals, who advocate and essentially are another set of eyes on their actions. If they really don’t like doulas… this may be suggesting they don’t like being challenged or having more understanding eyes- doulas can point out to their clients evidence based information through education that increases the expecting parents advocating skills which can frustrate certain care providers- it’s not our intention to upset them- we just intend to empower our people.

3. Policies around cord clamping - a lot of hospitals now clam to do “delayed cord clamping” which looks like a nurse literally counting down the seconds (60 seconds) and another waiting with the clamp and cord in this hands- this isn’t optimal. And why it can be important to be very specific - “optimal cord clamping minimum 5 minutes” or “wait until the cord is white and not pulsating”

This is all about empowerment and focusing on the fact that this if your baby, your experience and you may only go through this a couple of times in your life- while it’s just another day in their job.

Know the answers to these questions can really help you feel confident in your choice of provider.

The postpartum trenches are deep, emotional, vulnerable, sore, and they have their intense growing pains (doesn’t matter if it’s 1st or 4th baby!)

✨And you don’t have to do it alone. ✨

Hiring a postpartum doula supports the transition for both mom and baby into this new dynamic.

When is the best time to hire your postpartum doula? In the 3rd trimester! Our postpartum doulas tend to book up fast so it’s a good idea to secure services before baby is here- since we rarely are able to take on new contracts once baby is here (due to the demand from current clients)!

Postpartum doulas are trained to be help without taking up too much space or being a burden like some early postpartum interactions can be.

It’s better to book sooner than later 🤍

We are getting quite a few inquiries for February and March- unfortunately we have no space left!

We recommend booking your birth pool early. (We only require a $150 deposit to secure your pool) meaning there’s no such thing as too early.

As you can see- August is already spoken for and we are chatting with some mamas who are already looking into spring/summer bookings!

Dm us to get the details or to book your pool!

If you’re a first time mom this is for you! 👇

First make sure to follow and share this with your partner!

When it comes to labor - we want everything focused on ✨oxytocin✨

Meaning- staying home where our bodies are used to relaxing, resting, remaining calm. Home helps our bodies get into a great rhythm with little to no interruptions!

A good time to head toward the hospital is when contracts are ✨3-4 minutes apart✨ lasting a ✨full 60 seconds✨ and that has been going on for at least ✨an hour✨

This allows us to show up at the hospital and ideally labour won’t slow down.

As soon as we show up at the hospital - we want to drown out everything. Our partner can answer the questions. We are going to have our headphones in the music turned up and we are going to just be going through the contractions.

Then, as soon as we are getting into a room- we are dimming the lights, setting up the new lights, turning on the shower, and turning the music on so we can set the vibe to be cozy- why?

✨Oxytocin!✨

Oxytocin flows best when we feel safe, when our body is calm and not tense- so by doing these things we are encouraging our body to continue- not interrupting with bright lights and loud beeping machines.

Hospital births can absolutely be dreamy and empowering! Setting up the space is just the start of this journey of encouraging calm, peacefulness, and safety!

Heres what you need to know 👇

First- follow so you don’t miss any good labor and birth related info!

1. Navigating to the hospital and specifically the entrances for the hospital (daytime vs. After hours entrances are often different)
🔅 Learn the drive so your partner isn’t panicking
🔅 Find the fastest route
🔅 Understand where to park and where to enter (we don’t want aimless wandering while contracting- no thank you)
🔅 Knowing what floor is assessment and where L&D are
🔅 Knowing how much parking costs.

2. Go to L&D - at some hospitals assessment and L&D are separated, in others they are the same- you should know where each is and where to go
🔅 Again avoiding aimless wandering while in labor
🔅 Knowing how to get there (some hospitals have clear written navigation- others use numbers with no “labor and delivery” wording - it’s important to know what your hospital is!)

3. Check in with nurses
🔅 “Hey! I’m [insert name] - I am planning on giving birth here and was wondering if you’d be ok with me just taking 5 minutes- do you have a room you could show me?”
🔅 As long as they aren’t swamped (hence daytime) they will probably have no problem easing some of your anxieties (I’ve never had a nurse tell a client they couldn’t come!)
🔅 Ask if you need to bring a ball/ peanut ball, what is available for you at this particular hospital and what the nurses wish more moms brought!

4. Go on a quick tour- I’m not saying 30 minutes. I mean 2-5 minutes
🔅 Look at the rooms
🔅 Ask questions
🔅 Respect the mamas who may be there in labor

Then find a confident way out.

Going to get familiar with your hospital is a great way to help you feel safe and comfortable when the time comes- both things that will help with physiological labor!

For low risk mamas- homebirth can be a great option!

In Alberta, in order to have a homebirth we need a registered midwife- and you have to apply early to the early!

Did you know your nurse/ midwife can give you a tour of your placenta?

I encourage you to take the tour!

This “after birth” is so much more than just that.

You can see…
🫶🏼the amniotic sac (where baby swam around in the amniotic fluid),
🫶🏼 the tree of life (where the umbilical cord disperses throughout the placenta on baby’s side of the placenta)
🫶🏼 the maternal side of the placenta (the side that attached to your uterus)
🫶🏼 the two umbilical arteries and one umbilical vein (all responsible for gas exchange with the placenta and pressure balancing as well)

By taking the tour of your baby’s first home you gain appreciation for the work you two (or more) have done together over the last 9 months, you will recognize the reason you may have needed iron supplemental support, you are more likely to honor the entire experience you just went through - giving yourself permission to rest and heal the placenta wound in your uterus.

And it can help you gain appreciation for how intricate this whole process of pregnancy and birth is.

Whether your placenta supported you well through your whole pregnancy, or you went through induction because it decided to stop working (like for preeclampsia) you can still take the tour 🤍

Did you tour your placenta? Let me know in the comments 👇

Birthwork isn’t just a job.

It’s a calling. A lifestyle. A passion. A desire. A drive.

Birthwork calls out the deepest parts of oneself - it asks us to draw on our experience to empower but pushes us to remove ourselves to empower her. Hold space for her- in ways we needed/wanted/desired.

I love my work. And I hope to continue in this work- forever.

TW- Miscarriage • Chemical Pregnancy

I have been a little more quiet on here the last couple months. As I get back to posting more regularity, it only feels right to honour the experience we just went through. I don’t feel like we can just pretend like this didn’t happen and move on. So here- in my little corner of the internet this will live 🤍

We would’ve been 12 weeks this week.

The announcements would have gone out.

But instead we are in limbo- missing you and trying to recover from the loss of hope in what you would have brought to our family.

I never realized the mental game that an early loss/chemical/miscarriage carried with it-
💔Wondering if you were even real
💔Feeling dumb for feeling so sad because it was so early
💔Hating my sadness because others had experienced worse/lost a baby later in pregnancy/ suffered from infant loss etc.
💔Questioning all the decisions and thing I did in those first few weeks
💔Wondering what is wrong with my body
💔Blaming my diet, the lack of or too much exercise.

We had been prepping. We had been trying. We got pregnant and then we weren’t pregnant anymore.

And somehow still hoping we may be given a baby soon.

I never knew the pain that could come from losing a baby so early.

If you have ever experienced a loss/ chemical pregnancy- you are not alone. Your pain is valid. Your sadness is valid. Your confusion of valid. You are enough. You did nothing wrong 🫶🏼
