We’re excited to introduce Amanda Larson, our youth leader, on our first aid training team!

Born and raised in Squamish, Amanda’s love for the outdoors has shaped every part of her life, from exploring local trails to sharing adventures with her family.

Before joining us, Amanda spent years facilitating art workshops, guiding creative learning experiences and sparking curiosity in people of all ages. Through that work, she discovered her true passion: teaching.

Now, she’s bringing that same enthusiasm, patience, and creativity into the world of first aid training. Amanda is especially excited to empower young people with the confidence, knowledge, and life-saving skills they can carry with them.

Join us in giving Amanda a warm welcome. We’re so lucky to have her on the team!

🚨 What to Do if a Baby is Choking 🚨

Choking can happen in the blink of an eye, and knowing what to do can save a life.

If a child or infant is choking:
1️⃣ Encourage them to cough if they can breathe or make sounds.
2️⃣ Call 911 immediately if they cannot breathe, speak, or are turning blue.
3️⃣ Give 5 back blows, give 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) for children over 1 year old, or 5 chest thrusts.
4️⃣ For infants under 1 year, use 5 back blows + 5 chest thrusts.
5️⃣ Continue until the object is expelled or professional help arrives.

Remember: Stay calm, act quickly, and always seek medical attention after a choking incident.

Heading out on an adventure this winter? Make sure your pack is ready for anything the cold can throw at you.

Here’s what every outdoor explorer should stash in their winter-ready first aid kit:

✔️ Hand & toe warmers
✔️ Thermal emergency blanket
✔️ Bandages & blister pads (because winter boots = blister season!)
✔️ Instant cold/heat packs
✔️ Mini flashlight or headlamp
✔️ Lip balm & skin barrier ointment to prevent windburn
✔️ Electrolyte packets (yes—dehydration happens in winter too!)
✔️ First aid tape that sticks in cold temps
✔️ Small multi-tool + tweezers
✔️ Alcohol wipes + waterproof dressings
✔️ Portable battery bank for your phone (cold drains batteries FAST)

Having the right gear on hand keeps adventures fun and safe.

Level up your first aid skills with our upcoming Intermediate First Aid (formerly OFA Level 2) course in Whistler!

What's the difference between Basic First Aid and Intermediate (Standard) First Aid?

Intermediate (Standard) First Aid is designed for workers in higher-risk occupations (construction, childcare, outdoor guiding), caregivers, or anyone needing a WorkSafeBC-compliant intermediate certification. It's more comprehensive and in-depth, intended for people in higher-risk environments. It includes everything in Basic First Aid, plus:

✅ CPR-C for adults, children, and infants
✅ AED (Automated External Defibrillator) use
✅ Severe bleeding and shock management
✅ Bone, joint, and muscle injuries (fractures, sprains, dislocations)
✅ Head, neck, and spinal injuries
✅ Environmental emergencies (hypothermia, heat stroke, frostbite)
✅ Medical emergencies (allergic reactions, seizures, diabetic emergencies)

Here's how it works:
8 hours of online learning
8 hours of in-person training

📍 Where: Whistler Hostel International (HI), 1035 Legacy Way, Whistler BC
📅 When: January 17, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, and February 21 + March 29
Investment: $149 – $189 (depending on certification vs. recertification)
