Do you notice a shift in your energy when the sun returns? I sure do!


During the dark PNW winters, many of us experience lower energy, motivation, or mood. When the sun appears, even briefly, it can bring activation: more ease in our bodies, more openness to connection, and more capacity. Soak it up as we know the rain will likely return again soon.

As a therapist, and simply as a human, self-care-finding ways to reset is very important. For me, sometimes a reset looks like a canoe ride. There’s something about the calm, rhythmic, repetitive movement that leads to a sense of peace and ease. Activities such as walking, skiing, paddling, and cycling all have a similar effect. The left-right movement helps to stimulate both hemispheres of the brain, creating a fully integrated brain state that fosters a sense of calm and connection.
When we are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or in a survival state, we are typically more activated in the lower regions of the brainstem and middle brain — the emotion and fear centers.
