While estimates range, roughly half of pregnancies continue past 40 weeks. So what happens then?
At 41 weeks, providers often offer a biophysical profile including:
✅ an ultrasound checking fetal movement and amniotic fluid levels, and
✅ a non-stress test consisting of fetal monitoring, assessing the fetal heart rate and it’s response to fetal
movement and/or contractions
The results from these tests can help inform potential next steps, from continuing to wait for labor to start on its own, to inducing, to electing for cesarean birth.
