Today we’re holding space for both World Social Justice Day while continuing to honour Black History Month.

Social justice isn’t a trending topic. It also isn’t a month of awareness that we put away again until next year. It’s the daily, steady work of removing barriers, redistributing opportunity, and reimagining systems so everyone belongs. It’s employment equity. It’s anti-racism. It’s disability justice. It’s intersectionality in action.

Black history reminds us that many of the rights and labour protections we rely on today were shaped by Black organizers, thinkers, and community leaders who pushed systems to bend toward fairness. Social justice reminds us that the work is not finished.

At Avalon Employment Inc. we believe inclusive employment is social justice in practice. When we create pathways for people with disabilities, when we challenge racism in workplaces, when we support employers to build cultures of belonging, we are not doing charity work. We are participating in systemic change.

This month and today especially, we recommit to advancing equity, and building workplaces where everyone belongs.

The work continues. And so do we. ✊🏾

This Black History Month, Avalon Employment is proud to amplify organizations leading meaningful anti-racism work in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Today we’re sharing a post from the Anti-Racism Coalition of NL introducing Ravensong Consulting NL, founded by educator Khadeja Raven Anderson.

Ravensong’s work centers anti-Black racism, intersectionality, youth leadership, and culturally grounded community building across our province. From workplace training to youth camps to creating brave, affirming spaces for dialogue, their approach reminds us that equity is not a checklist. It is daily practice rooted in education, relationship, and action.

We encourage our community to learn more about their work and support organizations that are helping build a more inclusive and equitable Newfoundland and Labrador.

Mentorship moments that matter can happen in as little as an hour! For both our mentor and mentee, having a space to connect about their shared desire to help others was invaluable. Our mentee learned more about the skills he needed to succeed and the recruitment process, while our mentor had the opportunity to invest in future talent! It was a win-win for everybody ⭐

As we amplify this message from PSAC-AFPC, we’re reminded that the labour movement has always been shaped by those who pushed for equity when it wasn’t easy or popular. Black activists didn’t just strengthen unions, they strengthened the very idea that every worker deserves dignity, voice, and opportunity.

That same foundation carries into the supported employment movement for persons with intellectual disabilities. The belief that everyone belongs in the workforce, with fair wages and meaningful inclusion, is part of the broader fight for justice that Black labour leaders helped advance.

Progress in employment equity is interconnected. When we honour Black labour history, we honour the ongoing work to build workplaces where everyone can contribute and thrive. ✊🏿
