🔥Hot take:
If you’re terrified of your own thoughts, you’re probably a very good mom.

Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts by Karen Kleiman should be required reading in postpartum care.

Almost 100% of new moms have intrusive thoughts.

The problem isn’t the thought.
It’s that no one warned you it would happen.

One thing I’m trying to master is to stop apologizing for a “messy” house. It’s important to do our best, and today, this is what my “best” looks like. Mess doesn’t mean chaos, mess can mean connection. This house is evidence of life. Can you relate? 💛

🌹 Birth doesn't have to be just a medical event, it can be a relational event too.

🌹 Partners can feel connected and involved, instead of helpless.

🌹 Many partners freeze, feel overwhelmed, worry, or are afraid of doing the wrong thing. Without support, they can unintentionally step back. Doulas can help with this!

As a birth doula, I can work with partners too, by:
✨Showing partners what to do
✨Giving reassurances
✨Translate procedures when needed
✨Provide reminders of nutrition and breaks
✨Help them stay grounded
✨Help take care of their needs so they can focus on loving and supporting the birthing person

This can in turn help non-birthing people transition into parenthood more confidently, reduce birth trauma for BOTH parents, assist with baby bonding, feel more empowered instead of powerless, and strengthen connection between partners.

Let's work together to make this experience powerful and beautiful!

Let’s talk about what healing actually looks like.

It’s rarely linear. It doesn’t mean feeling calm all the time or “fixing” yourself. Healing often looks like learning to feel safe in your body, building trust at your own pace, and being met with care when things feel complicated.

At The Calm Place, we take a trauma-informed, human-centred approach to therapy—one that honours your nervous system, your lived experience, and your need for safety, choice, and connection. Because healing isn’t about becoming someone new, it’s about coming home to yourself, with support.

Myth: Doula's don't agree with birthing pain meds (i.e., epidurals)

Fact: As a doula, I want to support your needs and wants as long as it's safe! P.s., I LOVED my epidural during both my childbirths and wouldn't have changed a thing!

If you want pain medication during labor, GREAT. If you don't want pain medication during labor, GREAT. I will support you in either decision you make, and give you the information, tips, and tricks on how to work with both!!

You are a rockstar no matter what you choose!! 🤜🤛

We’re so pleased to announce that we have added a Nurse Practitioner to our The Calm Place community.🧑🏼‍⚕️

With over 25 years of experience in mental health and addictions, Nancy Dove has practiced across diverse settings—from St. John’s to Hawaii—supporting children, adolescents, adults, and older adults in both community-based and inpatient acute care. She completed her Master of Nursing: Nurse Practitioner in January 2024 and has been working as a Primary Care Provider in community clinics in the St. John’s area.

Nancy brings a non-judgmental, trauma-informed, inclusive, and collaborative approach to care, partnering closely with clients to support their individual health needs. At The Calm Place, she offers episodic care for clients without a Primary Care Practitioner, including medication management for mental health concerns and follow-up care after an ADHD diagnosis, as part of our integrated model of support.

Please join us in warmly welcoming Nancy to The Calm Place đź’ś
