Cardiac amyloidosis is a condition where a protein gets deposited in the heart, making it stiff. This protein is called amyloid and is caused due to an inherited disease called familial cardiac amyloidosis, as a result of other conditions such as bone or blood cancer, or another medical problem causing inflammation.

Amyloid deposits affect the heart by restricting its movement, rendering it unable to contract and relax efficiently, hence its other names restrictive cardiomyopathy and stiff heart syndrome. Cardiac amyloidosis manifest in symptoms similar to heart failure because while the heart movement is restricted, the blood pools in the lungs and in the body.

This pooling makes the fluid shift from within the vessels and into the soft tissues around it. Fluid present in soft tissue manifests in lower limb edema, and fluid in the lungs manifest as cough, shortness of breath and wheezes. These deposits can also affect the electrical impulses traveling through the heart, leading to arrhythmias.
