Do we normalize back pain?

Do we normalize back pain?

How common Is back pain in horses? Do we normalise it?

Recent studies show that back pain is one of the most widespread issues in modern sport and riding horses.
New literature suggests:
• 48–54% of performance horses show measurable back dysfunction
• Riding school and leisure horses may reach 55–74% prevalence
• Many cases go unnoticed until behaviour or performance declines

Back pain isn’t rare, it’s normalised.
And the horse’s back rarely becomes painful in isolation. Hoof balance, limb discomfort, saddle fit, rider asymmetry and training patterns all contribute.

Understanding the scale of the problem is the first step toward better welfare and longevity.

Immune System Support

A strong immune system is crucial for a horse’s health. PEMF therapy for enhancing immune function, helping horses better fight off infections and illnesses.

There have been a number of confirmed cases of EHV/EHM lately, both in Canada and the USA. So here’s what you need to know about the disease 🚨

Equine Herpesvirus is a common virus in horse populations worldwide. The most common species are EHV-1, which causes respiratory infections, abortion and can cause neurological disease (EHM), and EHV-4, which most commonly causes respiratory disease.
The disease is highly contagious and gets spread through nasal secretions, both through direct (nose to nose contact) and indirect (through equipment, people,…) contact.

When infected, most horses will develop a fever, become lethargic, go off feed and water. If the disease progresses, respiratory signs (like coughing and nasal discharge) and neurological signs (ataxia, trouble swallowing, loss of tail tone, weakness in the hind end,…) can become apparent.

As this is a viral infection, no specific treatment is available. Treatment of the disease is therefore largely focused on supportive care (IV fluids, anti-inflammatories,…).

This is why prevention is so important!!!
There are things you can do to help control the spread and help protect your horse.
We recommend vaccinating against EHV, especially if your horse is frequently in contact with other horses.
Practice strict biosecurity when visiting with your horse at the barn and when travelling. Avoid contact with other horses, use your own food and water bucket, don’t share grooming supplies, etc.

Herpes vaccines cover for type 1 and type 4, but the vaccine is made for respiratory and abortion form of the disease. There is not a vaccine made for the neurological/meningitis form, which is what our biggest concern is today.

If you have questions regarding the disease, or you suspect your horse may be affected, please do not hesitate to reach out to us via phone (780-922-3647) or email (office@delaneyvetservices.com)

My Story

My Great Grandfather worked on the historic Turkey Track Ranch and the 76 Cattle Company in Saskatchewan that was started in the late 1800’s and attended the Calgary Stampede in 1912. He also had Percheron breeding stallions along with 20 broodmares and stood the stallions to outside mares. My Grandfather used working horses and had a few race horses as well. My parents started breeding quarter horses in the early 1970’s and my Dad still breeds a handful of mares to this day. So you might just say “horses” where a part of me through the generations.

I started riding before I was born, as my Mom rode up until she was 8 months pregnant. At 3 years old I obtained my first pony, Ringo, and my Dad still says “he had a real rein on him”. Horse showing, 4H, musical drills, 3 day eventing, cattle drives, endurance rides, parades, jumping, dressage and most recently sorting have all been apart of my lifestyle. I lived outside during the summer as a child staying with the broodmare band and their offspring. I was truly blessed.

More recently, our daughter Brooke decided the world of horses was something she also wanted to explore and has grown a passion for reining. It’s been especially rewarding watching her ride and I know my parents have been thrilled to see her as 5th generation horse lover.

It just seemed to make sense to be able to be able to be a part of the horse community through offering Pulse Electromagnetic Field Therapy. Meeting and getting to know each horse is a privilege I don’t take lightly and my hope is to be able to help them feel amazing; they are truly a gift to us.
