A reduction in strength is linked to a spectrum of health consequences such as vascular and cardiac pathologies, musculoskeletal injuries, metabolic diseases and psychological health. In a 2024 review article published in the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition it stated that low hand grip strength is on the top 10 list of risk factors for major cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. In addition to low hand grip strength, hypertension, diabetes, abdominal obesity and low physical activity are also included as top 10 risk factors. Aging is a natural part of life and physical and cognitive declines are inevitable; however, we can impact how drastically our bodies will decline through what we eat and what we do.

*Tips to stay strong and functional while aging

Resistance Training: Regularly engaging in the practice of heavy resistance training will result in enhanced muscle size, strength and power and stimulate hormonal releases necessary to build and maintain muscle mass. Through lifting, pulling and carrying heavy loads, you are also strengthening your grip without even knowing it!

Grip Strength Exercises: Focusing on specific hand grip strengthening exercises will not only target your hand grip but will also promote joint health in the wrists, elbows and shoulders.

Activities of Daily Living: There are 24 hours in a day, and your daily habits have a huge impact on your physical health. Participating regularly in activities such as household chores, cleaning, yard work, childcare and grocery shopping all aid in your ability to stay functional.
