It is common for parents who are told to supplement in hospital to be handed a full bottle of formula without direction on how much to offer baby. As it can be difficult to control the flow from a bottle, (and babies instinctually love to suck!) babies end up taking more volume than they actually need, and this can reduce breastfeeding and breast milk supply.

An effective way to supplement your baby in the early days, if needed, is to use an alternative method. A clean spoon, cup or syringe all work well for this purpose. It is easy to offer small amounts, and to watch your baby to see if they are still hungry (in which case, of course you can offer more). It is MUCH easier to successfully establish breastfeeding when baby has received appropriate amounts in a slow and well-controlled manner.

If you are supplementing and would like more information, or to transition to more feeding at the breast, contact us at thebabynurses@gmail.com to book an appointment.

So you’ve prepared at length for the birth of your baby, that’s great! But, once your baby is here, how much do you know about breastfeeding?

Research shows prenatal breastfeeding education is invaluable to the success of your breastfeeding journey.

We discuss
- typical infant behaviours
- what to expect
- the amount of colostrum your baby will need
- typical early latching positions
- how to handle ni**le pain/damage if it happens

We also cover what to do if things aren’t going as expected
- options for how to supplement
- how much to offer baby *hint, it may be less than you think!
- if/when to pump
- where to find support

As well as many other topics!

We will provide you with a colostrum collection kit if you want to try to get some colostrum to have ready for your baby.

Contact us to book your prenatal education session, held at the beautiful Empower Health Boutique (70 Innovator Ave, Stouffville)

Breast compressions are probably the single most useful technique we teach to every breastfeeding parent.
Effective compressions can help with:
⭐️ Sleepy babies (could be small, premature, jaundiced, or low energy)
⭐️ Babies who are fussy at the breast
⭐️ Babies who are used to a bottle
⭐️ Increasing milk supply

We love this technique! Let us know if you have any questions! And, as always, seek an IBCLC for qualified breastfeeding support if you are encountering difficulties!

Hello! We’re so happy you’re here! My name is Heather Pearsons. I’m a Registered Nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I thought I would introduce myself for you to get to know me a bit.

I’ve been a Registered Nurse for about 10 years and started my career in the NICU at the Hospital for Sick Children. I LOVED (and still love) the NICU and all the smallest patients, but what really blew me away was how unbelievably amazing breastmilk and parental connection were for these very tiny and very vulnerable babies. This piqued my interest in breastfeeding and breastmilk and led me on the journey of becoming an IBCLC.

I have subsequently had two boys and I will admit, I struggled with my first and didn’t get support. I was under the impression it was SUPPOSED to hurt for the first few weeks; I experienced the “toe curling pain”. I ended up
figuring it out, but if I could go back in time, I would have arranged support before my son was born. There is so much to know and unfortunately very limited education and support provided at the hospital for breastfeeding parents.

As life and my career have progressed, I have found that my passion lies in helping parents to breastfeed, and as an advocate for attachment parenting.

I would love to be a part of your feeding journey, helping to normalize infant feeding, behaviour, and parental connection.

Hello and welcome! My name is Arden, I am a Registered Nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Here is a little about me…..
I’ve been an RN for over 20 years working most of my career in critical care in the hospital setting. I became an IBCLC in 2019 and feel so fortunate to work in a profession that educates, empowers, and advocates for families as they navigate new parenthood. After the births of my two daughters, I was fortunate to have incredible feeding support from breastfeeding specialists that helped me navigate painful latching and normalized expectations. I became a passionate advocate for breastfeeding and I have always maintained that my positive experience was due to the support I received in those early days. I believe that ‘supported is best’ when it comes to learning to feed your baby. When I provide you with lactation support, your goals are my goals, and I’m here to provide evidence-based, compassionate, non judgemental care, helping families get off to the very best start with feeding their babies.

🎉🎉 HAND EXPRESSION 🎉🎉
Hand expression is such a helpful tool both prenatally and postpartum.
Hand expression can:
✅ increase your confidence
✅ increase how much colostrum you’re able to express
✅ help you avoid needing to supplement with formula
✅ help relieve engorgement
✅ make it easier to latch your baby
✅ help your baby to open their mouth widely
✅ is a safe and free way to express breastmilk

This is usually safe from about 36 weeks in a low-risk pregnancy, but check with your midwife/OB first!

You can order oral syringes online, or ask your midwife or OB for some as they may be able to provide them!
