Mac took his time, seemingly enjoying the mountain sunset view, before sauntering over to join the mares for their evening feed. They’re each unique, the mares were eagerly awaiting their hay, grabbing mouthfuls before I could spread it in the feeders.

Merry Christmas Eve all. Grey, chilly, snowy this morning, but sun is forecast to return Christmas Day afternoon.

The sound of cold. Hooves with ice balls on squeaky snow. Mac stares across the fields often before coming to his hay. Tinker acts concerned about what could be concerning him.

Good news: Snow on horses’ backs means their thick coats are insulating them, keeping them warm. A bit like snow on the roof means that heat isn’t escaping.
Bad news: slow seeping of water out of their favourite automatic waterer. Waiting for the predicted warm up, to figure out if the plug is just in crooked, or on a piece of hay, or is broken. I cleaned the waterer at the last possible moment at dusk, before the freeze up, and may have rushed away to warm my hands before ensuring that the plug was secure.
Good news: it’s still holding water, and it appears that the ice has sealed it.
Bad news: above freezing is predicted for middle of the night, will it start leaking again?
Planning to haul large amounts of hot water to melt my ice tower, allowing me to thaw and re-set the plug that appears to be crooked, in hopes that’s all the fixin’ needed.

It was a lovely long fall. 3 horses have 3 large horse shelters but prefer to stand in the snow watching for ‘hay lady’.

Enjoying no snow and a mild evening, horses saunter in for hay. They’re much more eager to be fed when it’s cold and snowy, as pawing for grass in the pasture is more work.
