Circa 1979, the expression on Buddy’s face…
My dad got out the needle nosed pliers, yanked all the quills, and we loaded him, hauled him an hr and a half, rode a full afternoon, hauled home and threw him out to pasture.
If I found a horse of mine looking like this today, I’d probably have the vet, sedation, possibly pain killers, and give the horse time off!

Mac had been hanging back from joining clients for awhile, but warmed up to this partner, even balancing all 4 hooves on ‘the podium’, not easy for his long body, and less coordinated limbs, he ‘fell off’ on a different attempt. Not a high energy horse, he exerted some effort to respond, rewarding his partner’s positive energy.

Bella chose her partner, then was a willing follower, comfortable enough to put her front hooves on the ‘podium’ and enjoy a good stretch. Enjoyed seeing their bond.

Bella is a dramatic yawner, in this case I believe showing an increase in parasympathetic nervous system activity, which is associated with calming and relaxing.

🧠 IQ vs 🫶EQ – And Why Emotional Intelligence Matters More Than Ever

Most people are familiar with IQ (Intelligence Quotient) – a measure of cognitive abilities like logic, reasoning, and problem-solving. But EQ (Emotional Quotient, or Emotional Intelligence) is equally, if not more, essential in navigating today’s complex, fast-paced world.

📊 IQ → Measures intellectual abilities
💡 EQ → Measures ability to recognize, understand, and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others.

Why EQ Matters Today:
While IQ can get you far in aspects of life like career or educational programs.

EQ often determines how well you perform and how far you go.

High EQ is linked to:
• Better relationships
• Improved conflict resolution
• Resilience under stress
• Leadership effectiveness

In a world where collaboration, empathy, and adaptability are crucial, emotional regulation – the ability to control emotional reactions in a healthy way – has become a core life skill.

Poor emotional regulation can lead to miscommunication, impulsive decisions, and strained relationships, both personally and professionally.

🐴How Equine Interactions Build EQ:
Working with horses and other equines offers a unique and powerful way to develop emotional intelligence:
• Self-awareness → Horses mirror human body language and emotional states, providing instant, honest feedback
• Self-regulation → Equines respond best to calm, consistent energy, encouraging humans to manage their own emotional responses.
• Empathy → Reading an equines non-verbal cues sharpens the ability to perceive subtle emotional states in others.
• Social skills → Interacting safely and effectively with a large prey animal requires clear communication, patience, and trust-building.

Equine Facilitated Wellness helps people—from youth to corporate teams—develop these crucial emotional skills

In short:
IQ may help you solve problems.
EQ helps you solve people most importantly yourself!

And sometimes, the best teacher for EQ… has four legs, a tail, and a knack for telling you exactly how you’re showing up in the world.

Mosquitoes are as bad as I’ve ever seen them here. First pic is how many landed on Bella walking between horse shelter and feeder. Next pics are how many landed on Tinker 20 minutes after being drenched in DIY spray. Looking at my DIY recipe collection, wondering do I try new recipes, my anecdotal research tells me ‘nothing works’ for long. Years ago, rode out on 3 horses wearing 3 types of mosquitoe repellant- they all wore off in anout 20 minutes when the horses heated up.
Fly sheets and masks help but I won’t turn the horses out in barb wire wearing them.
Personally, won’t step outside without full face coverage myself.
Anyone have a favourite out of my repellant recipes?
