Receding gums are not necessarily a sign of aging.

Although gum recession has traditionally been associated with aging, it’s actually caused by things like grinding your teeth, brushing or flossing too hard, exposure to acidic drinks such as energy drinks, smoking, or frequent teeth whitening.

Fortunately, there’s a lot we can do to prevent gum recession. Regular checkups and oral hygiene appointments — as well as changing dental habits — can help keep gums healthy. Each case is different, so ask us for advice at your next check-up!

People sometimes think sports guards are only needed for contact sports like lacrosse, hockey, rugby or martial arts, but athletes playing non-contact sports need protection as well. If there’s a risk of getting hit in the mouth or jaw like baseball, basketball or soccer, or a risk of falling like skateboarding, skiing or snowboarding, then a sports guard is a good investment.

Custom sports mouthguards are more durable and last longer than store-bought guards. We take an impression of the mouth and specially make each guard for a better fit. That means the guard is more comfortable - and more likely to be worn! Ask us about custom mouthguards today. Call .

There’s a connection between excessive gum chewing and headaches, according to a recent study on kids and teens that chewed gum between one and six hours a day. Many participants saw improvement with their chronic headaches when stopping their daily habit. Still, we recommend spitting out your gum once the flavour is gone.

Straws have gotten a bad rap lately and for good reason! While plastic straws are bad for the environment, drinking from a straw can help reduce cavities. Sipping sugary drinks through a straw positioned towards the back of your mouth can help reduce the amount of time the sugar is in contact with your teeth … but please use paper straws or carry your own reusable straw. :)

You should clean your tongue every time you brush your teeth, either using your toothbrush or a tongue cleaner.
A thin layer of mucus can trap bacteria and food particles on your tongue, causing a foul taste and bad breath.
Tongue cleaners have a built-in scraper and soft bristles that can reach deep into the uneven areas of your tongue – removing odour-causing bacteria for a fresher, cleaner mouth.

Chewing gum after a meal stimulates saliva flow, which can wash away food particles, neutralize decay-causing acids produced by bacteria, and strengthen enamel. Look for gum that contains non-cavity causing sweeteners such as xylitol or aspartame. And remember, chewing gum isn’t a substitute for regular brushing and flossing!

The bacteria found in plaque can irritate your gums and lead to early gum disease, called gingivitis.

You might have gingivitis if you're experiencing mild inflammation of your gums, red or swollen gums, plaque build-up, bad breath, gums that bleed easily, and tooth sensitivity. But because it often doesn't cause pain, many patients have no idea they have gingivitis until we tell them.

Gingivitis can usually be reversed with our help, so be sure to come in for regular hygiene visits so we can help spot it in the earliest stage.

Gum disease can be a scary topic, but not when you know the facts! Red or swollen gums, bleeding gums, bad breath, or sensitive teeth may indicate the early stages of gum disease (gingivitis). Left untreated, gum disease can lead to shrinking gums, and tooth loss. Caught early, gum disease can be reversed with periodontal treatment and at-home care.

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing before bed, plus regular dental check-ups with professional teeth cleanings are essential in preventing gum disease. Call to book an appointment today!

Our hygiene visits take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on a patient’s oral health needs.

During a standard hygiene visit, our hygienist will scale your teeth to remove plaque bacteria and calculus (hardened plaque) and polish your teeth to remove stains and give them a shiny finish. There may also be a fluoride treatment, as well as a discussion on the best ongoing care for your teeth and gums.

Be sure to come in for a hygiene visit every six months to maintain good oral health. Call today to schedule your next appointment with us.
