For the past two years I have had the privilege to be invited to be part of activities for the “I See You” spousal retreat organized by individuals from a Spousal Peer Support Group founded by ladies in the London area.
Interacting with this group of amazing ladies, hearing about their challenges, and witnessing their incredible strength, courage, and resilience, has motivated me to work towards establishing a bi-weekly support group here in the Almaguin Highlands area (inclusive of Parry Sound, North Muskoka, and South Nipissing districts).
As a mental health professional, and someone with lived experience navigating complex-post traumatic stress and trauma, I see the impact that post traumatic stress injuries, vicarious trauma, secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout have on families, and recognize the gaps in the support available to spouses and family members. The structure of the group would consist of bi-weekly (no fee) peer support group meetings along with other mental health and wellness focused activities throughout the year to help support the well-being of spouses and family members. Meetings and activities would be held south of Sundridge at Equietude Wellness Centre and facilitated by myself (Betty Hagey, Registered Psychotherapist, MACP, CCTP-II, TITC-CT) and trained co-facilitators. If you are the spouse (or family member) of a veteran/military, first responder, or public safety professional and are interested in being part of this group please reach out to me via private message, email at bhagey@equietude.ca, or phone 705-493-3784 for more information.
Also, if you are reading this and know someone who would benefit from being part of this Peer Support group, please share this information with them.
It is my hope to start having regular meetings in early to mid April.

Even though many, including myself, are ready for days when there is no more snow, today I choose to pause, acknowledge that there is a season for everything, and enjoy the stillness, calm, and beauty of the moment...

Things to ponder from a training course that I am attending on Somatic Trauma Therapy approaches...
"trauma replaces patterns of connection with patterns of protection", ...
"we can only move as fast as the speed of "trust"',... and
"trauma does not equal mental illness, trauma equals mental injury" ...from Linda Thai's Advanced Somatic Trauma Treatment Method.

I love attending these webinars and seeing all the positive changes that are emerging in the field of mental health, and more importantly in how trauma treatment approaches are normalizing innate survival responses and strategies rather than pathologizing and stigmatizing them. Looking forward to incorporating what I am learning into the programs at Equietude Wellness Centre.
If you struggling to feel safe and connected, you are not alone... at Equietude Wellness Centre we offer a person-centered, mind, body, spirit approach to healing, personal growth, and trauma treatment.
