New Brunswick Remembers Donald Grant

Donald Gerald Grant, 93, of Moncton, passed away on Thursday January 29, 2026 at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont Hospital.

Born in Halifax, NS, he was the son of the late Gerald and Ida (Belliveau) Grant.

Prior to his retirement, he had a long teaching career at Harkin’s High in Newcastle, Campbellton High, and Harrison Trimble in Moncton both as a Physical Education and English teacher.

Don Grant was a natural leader and a larger-than-life presence—gregarious, charismatic and a true force in every room he entered.

He wore many hats! A lifelong sports enthusiast as a basketball referee, baseball umpire, coach, and mentor to name a few. He brought the same passion to competition as he did to conversation, always ready with a quick joke and an easy laugh.

Above all, Don was most proud of his family: his wife, his five children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren, who were the greatest joy and legacy of his remarkable 93 years.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Fernande (Belliveau); five children: Paula M. Genereux (Ronald), Donald P., Leslie Anne Arseneau (Charles), Harold B. (Cindy McNeil), and Lisa G. Aller (Mark); 10 grandchildren: Mélanie, Jeffrey, Alicia, Véronic, Jonathan, Alexis, Kristin, Donald Jr., Dion, and Devin; eight great-grandchildren: Burlyn, Damian, Ainsley, Cael, Elias, Elowyn, Boden, Mila, and Nyla; as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive condolences at Frenette Funeral and Cremation Centre, 88 Church Street, Moncton (506-858-1900) on Thursday February 5 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm only. The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church, 43 Botsford Street, Moncton on Friday February 6 at 11 am. A reception will follow at the Elks Club, 12 Weldon Street, Moncton, where anyone interested in an opportunity to share their memories of Don Grant are welcome to do so. "Let’s talk About Don". Interment will be at Our Lady of Calvary cemetery in Dieppe at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, in memory of Don, a contribution to Hospice SENB (Albert House) would be appreciated.

Words of comfort and donations can be made at www.frenettefuneralhome.com

A Canadian Armed Forces member has died while on deployment in Latvia, the Department of National Defence said Friday.

Gunner Sebastian Halmagean, originally from Hamilton, Ont., died near the Latvian capital of Riga on Thursday, DND said in a news release. An investigation into his death is ongoing.

"At this time, there is no indication this incident poses an increased threat to the safety and security of our deployed members," the news release said.

The release did not say how Halmagean died or share any other circumstances of his death.

Canadian forces are deployed to Latvia as part of Operation Reassurance, the CAF's largest overseas mission.

Halmagean had served in the Canadian Armed Forces for nearly three years. This was his first overseas deployment.

"The passing of Gunner Halmagean is a loss deeply felt for the Canadian Armed Forces," General Jennie Carignan, chief of the defence staff, said in the release. "On behalf of all our members, I offer my heartfelt sympathies to his loved ones and those who served alongside him."

Latvia is home to a multinational deployment of troops meant to deter Russian aggression in Europe's eastern flank. It is one of several NATO battle brigades deployed in eastern Europe.

Canada is the lead nation in the Latvia deployment.

The country shares land borders with four countries — two with NATO allies, Estonia and Lithuania, with its other two neighbours being Belarus and Russia.

In August, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Operation Reassurance would be extended by an additional three years, to 2029.

Anne Mary Elizabeth Leslie
1950 - 2026

NAH, NAH, NAH, NAH

NAH, NAH, NAH, NAH

hey, hey.

Goodbye.

If you are reading this, it means I am gone. I wanted to write my own obituary because who knows you better than yourself?

I had the time of my life. Life was good, really good. I wish a few things had been different, but you can’t control everything but you can control how you react to it. I was born in 1950, two years after my parents Michael and Euvdokiah Malanych came to Canada from Austria where they had been taken by N***s as slave labour to work in agriculture. After the war ended, immigration authorities offered them, as displaced persons, the opportunity to go to South America or Canada. I sure am glad they chose Canada. We lived in Waterford Ontario until 1955 and then moved to Cambridge, Ontario where we had a Ukrainian community at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. Children attended Ridna Schkola, Ukrainian School on Saturday mornings to learn how to read and write in Ukrainian dressed in our Ukrainian costumes for special occasions, and learned how to play the Bandura and how to dance traditional folk dances.

As a kid growing up, I wanted to be (in order) a cowgirl, a veterinarian, a dancer and a psychologist. But instead, I attended Conestoga College of Applied Arts and Technology and studied to be a journalist. When my husband Ed and I came east because he had gotten a job in radio broadcasting, I joined the Moncton Times Transcript as its entertainment editor and later became a general interest reporter where I was able to tell other’s stories, I moved on to association management work with the Multicultural Association of Greater Moncton of which I was one of the founders. I worked business, literacy, and fundraising. Some of the things I am most proud of include: as the executive director of MAGMA, developing a citizenship course for new Canadians and piloting the first HOST program for refugees in the province. I was responsible for matching the Peter Gzowsky Invitational Golf Tournament with the New Brunswick Committee for Literacy. The six years I spent as Lay Chaplain with the Unitarian Fellowship of Fredericton were spiritually enriching. Thank you to all the people who helped guide me. Over the course of my lifetime, I followed and studied a variety of religious paths. But for the most part, my philosophy of life was basically this:

Step over ants

Put worms back in the grass

Rescue baby caterpillars

Release spiders back into your garden

Open a window for bees to fly home

They are all little souls that deserve life too.

But the thing I am most proud of is our children, Lorissa and Nikolas who have become kind, compassionate and honourable adults. I am happy they have found partners with whom they are compatible: Nik with beautiful Melissa Morton who together have Diana (LunaMoona) and Lorissa with devoted Minh Tran who have a beautiful gift in son Liam.

To my husband of nearly 55 years, Edward Francis Leslie I say thank you for loving me the way I needed to be loved. When you smell the scent of roses you will know that I am nearby.

Goodbye to: to friends who have stuck by me through think and thin (you know who you are); to my family, my brother Michael Malanych (Heather Smith), niece Erin Malanych, grand nephew Myles Manuel and grandniece Madalyn Manual, brother Terry Malanych, nephews Tyler and Matthew Malanych, cousin Mary Malanych and cousins in Ukraine and Italy.

I will miss being torn from this earth, this beautiful earth. No more colours of fall for my eyes, the scent of spring wild flowers for my nose, the sound of wind and summer rain for my ears and hoar frost and icicles for my sense of touch in winter. I will miss whales and elephants and gorillas, birds and their sweet music. I will miss the unconditional love of pets. Gardening, it is said, is this purest of human pleasures. I agree with Ralph Waldo Emerson who said the earth laughs in flowers. Rainer Maria Rilke said: “Everything is blooming most recklessly: If it was voices instead of colours there would be an unbelievable shrieking into the heart of the night.” Such tender, wondrous beauty.

And finally, to those I may have offended, hurt or transgressed, please forgive me.

Arrangements have been entrusted to York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton, NB. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Unitarian Fellowship of Fredericton in the Spring of 2026. Interment will take place in Burtts Corner Community Cemetery following. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to any animal rescue charity. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com

Tyson Leo McKibbon
February 12, 1974 — January 23, 2026

With shattered hearts, we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, and Papa, Tyson Leo McKibbon, who left this world far too soon. Tyson, of Sunny Corner, NB, passed away peacefully at his residence on January 23, 2026, at the age of 51.

Tyson was a deeply loved father, grandfather, and friend. When Tyson loved, he loved big—with his whole heart. He was a hardworking lumberman and labourer who took great pride in honest, physical work and in providing for the people he loved most. His greatest joy in life was his family, especially his twin daughters, whom he was endlessly proud of. Tyson’s world revolved around loving them, supporting them, and always being there—no matter what.

Tyson was the kind of person you could always count on. If someone needed help, he never hesitated. To his family and friends, he was a source of strength, guidance, and unconditional love. To his grandchildren, he was simply Papa—adoring, proud, and full of love. His presence brought comfort, laughter, and a sense of safety to those around him.

Tyson was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Gloria McKibbon, and by his beloved wife, Melissa Ward of Curventon, NB.

He leaves behind his twin daughters, Alyssia McKibbon and Brittany McKibbon (Phillip); his stepchildren, Lillian Ward, Michael Ward (Desiree), and Aivery Morgan; his siblings, Bradley McKibbon (Kelly), Darren McKibbon (Sarah), and Owen McKibbon (Charlene); and his girlfriend Diana Witherall, who also held a meaningful place in his life. He was a proud and devoted Papa to his five grandchildren—Emery, Sawyer, Luka, Gia, and Peter—who were the light of his life and brought him endless joy.

Though his passing was sudden and unexpected, Tyson’s love and impact will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be remembered for his big heart, his loyalty, his willingness to help anyone in need, and the deep love he had for his family. He will be missed more than words can express and loved always.

Visitation will be held at Northumberland Funeral Home, 102 Pleasant Street, Miramichi, NB, on Thursday, January 29, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

A funeral service will also be held on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Northumberland Funeral Home Chapel, at 11 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the family would be greatly appreciated.

Messages of condolence may be shared through the funeral home website at northumberlandfh.com

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the paramedics for their kindness, compassion, and care shown to Tyson and his family during this incredibly difficult time.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of Northumberland Funeral Home & Crematorium, 102 Pleasant St., telephone (506) 622-7741.

New Brunswick Remembers Donna Wells (Smith-Doucette)

It is with great sadness that the family of Donna Wells of Quispamsis, NB, announce her passing on January 24, 2026, at Bobby’s Hospice with her family by her side.

Donna was born in Newcastle, NB on June 30, 1958, to the late Evelyn Jennie Melanson (Nee. Campbell) and Ernest Doucette.

Donna grew up in Saint John where she lived most of her life until her later years when she moved to join her children in Moncton and then Langley, BC, before moving back to live out her last years in Quispamsis, NB.

Donna loved her family and friends and will be so deeply missed by them. She worked at the West Side No Frills dating back to when it was the Village Food Store, then Super Value before becoming No Frills. For years she loved her customers, and they loved her right back. She was always the happy cashier that always told the customer to “Have a happy day”. While living in Moncton, she worked for Tim Hortons and at Walmart when she lived in Langley. She loved working in customer service and retired from Atlantic Superstore in Rothesay in July 2023.

Donna loved to garden and play Friday night cards at Bert and Cyndi’s (until Cyndi’s passing in September 2025). She loved Mickey Mouse and could never have enough Mickey shirts or anything Mickey. She loved hockey and was a true Habs fan and loved to get into the hockey rival in fun against the make me laughs fans or the booruins fans! And would always give them a GO HABS GO!!

She loved Christmas and the countdown was always on for when she could start to decorate, but never before Remembrance Day, and not an area was left out. She also enjoyed a Sunday dinner with her family and was always someone you could count on as a friend and was always there and willing to listen and give advice.

Cancer came for Donna, but she never bowed and gave cancer a fight, never allowing it to take her joy, peace and positivity. She was a warrior until her last breath. Before her passing, Donna loved trips to Sea Street to watch the Ocean, the bigger the waves the bigger the excitement. She had also found a new comfort in the Christian community and Jesus in the months leading to her passing. She loved to attend Celebrate Recovery at Kings Church KV when she was able.

Donna leaves behind and will be deeply missed by her daughter Shelley (John) Gowlett of Bloomfield; son J.R. Smith of Saint John; grandchildren Cheyenne Forgrave-Gowlett of Bloomfield, Jakob Watson of Alberta, Jordan Smith of Fredericton, Parker Richard of Sussex, Catherine Knodell, Sebastien Godin, Khloe Godin, Addison Smith, Oakley Smith, Willow Smith, and Monica Bell, all of Saint John; great granddaughter Ava Garland of Saint John; Brothers Ernie (Susan) Doucette of Quispamsis, David (Veronica) Doucette of Saint John; Sisters Gail Melanson, Joan Doucette, both of Saint John, Ann Cox of Quispamsis and Shirley Doucette of Ontario; Aunt Shirley McKiver; Uncle Gordie (June) Campbell of Saint John; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Beside her parents, Donna was predeceased by her husband John Wells; Stepfather Michael Melanson; Brother Eddie Doucette; Grandson Easton Smith; Sister-in-law Carol Doucette; Godparents Jake and Lizzy Davis; Cousin and close friend Cyndi Campbell.

Donna’s family would like to thank Chaplin Donne Foster for being there and guiding her spiritually. Tom and Angie Daly for all your love and support every step of the way, we truly appreciate and love you (Angie, give Tom a pinch for Mom). Extra-mural KV especially her nurse Jenn for her exceptional care of Mom. Home care worker Jolynn, you became family. Bobby’s Hospice, each and every staff member, the love and care you gave mom is something we will never forget. From cooking her favorite meal to making her dream of meeting Mickey Mouse come true. The compassion we were given will always be deeply engraved in our hearts; you are all angels on earth. Dr. Hemmings, Dr. Mackin and Dr. Love as well as Dr. Grey and Dr. Sandford, thank you all for your exceptional care of mom during her courageous battle, each one of you made it easier to get through this journey.
