Each month, we highlight a STRIVE story from across our community. These stories reflect what we stand for as an organization and showcase how we strive for excellence in everything we do, through meaningful connection, clear communication, and exceptional senior care.

We believe seniors should feel supported both physically and emotionally. Daily life can present unique challenges for those living with dementia, which is why we focus on creating thoughtful, comfortable living spaces that feel like home.

This month’s STRIVE story is from Agassiz Seniors Community and Glenwood Seniors Community:
A dedicated working group was established to improve the environment of the BSTN Care Unit, specifically for Residents requiring specialized dementia care. The initiative centres on creating a comforting, home-like setting by incorporating thoughtful design, sensory comfort, and familiar elements. This approach aims to support the emotional well-being, dignity, and daily experiences of Residents, reflecting a commitment to person-centred care. By fostering a sensory-friendly and familiar atmosphere, the program helps Residents, families, and staff feel engaged, supported, and at ease. Ultimately, the initiative promotes dignity and well-being for Residents while also bringing joy and purpose to families and staff, strengthening connections and creating a greater sense of home for everyone involved.

Why does being Canadian and family-owned matter in senior care?

For us, care is personal. Founded in 1993 by Al and Jenny Jina, Park Place Seniors Living has remained proudly Canadian-owned and family-led for over 30 years.

Being both Canadian and family owned means leadership is closely connected to every residence, and we make every decision based on our residents’ needs.

We make sure our care teams are supported and equipped to provide the best care possible. In turn, they are able to take the time to get to know each resident on a personal level, so everyone in our community feels seen and valued.

And because we stay connected at every level, each community reflects a deep understanding of the people it serves. No two are exactly alike, and that’s intentional.

Each month, we highlight a STRIVE story from across our community. These stories reflect what we stand for as an organization and showcase how we strive for excellence in everything we do, through meaningful connection, clear communication, and exceptional senior care.

Across the Park Place communities, we value creating an environment where residents feel welcomed and able to be themselves. Thoughtful programming allows everyone to make new friends, get creative, and have fun. When activities are designed around residents’ personal interests and abilities, they feel more included, and our community is strengthened.

This month’s STRIVE story is from Shaughnessy Seniors Community in Port Coquitlam:

The recreation department underwent a major transformation, introducing a vibrant calendar of activities such as baking, pet therapy, church services, Bingo, breakfast and lunch clubs, happy hours, ice cream socials, high tea, live entertainment, garden walks, bus outings, and specialized dementia programming. Community connections were expanded by welcoming local students for performances and sing-alongs. Sonia’s creative leadership was instrumental in driving these enhancements, which have significantly improved residents’ quality of life, increased family satisfaction, and fostered greater pride and collaboration within the team.

We’re excited to be celebrating Al and Jenny Jina, founders of Park Place, and recipients of the 2025 Ed Helfrich Long-Service Excellence Award.

Presented by the BC Care Providers Association, this award recognizes more than 30 years of dedication to transforming seniors’ care across Canada.

Al and Jenny founded Park Place with the belief that seniors deserve to feel respected, valued, and at home. That belief continues to shape our communities every day. We’re grateful for their leadership and the example they’ve set for the entire Park Place family.

Transitions can bring a lot of questions. What will everyday life look like when a little extra help is part of the picture? What can I expect?

At Clayton Heights Care Community we make sure every resident is cared for and supported in a way that feels respectful and dignifying. Residents continue to enjoy their daily routines in a safe environment that feels like home.

Personalized care is available whenever it’s needed, whether that’s assistance with daily tasks, medication support, or simply a steady presence nearby.

The first few weeks after you or your loved one move in are focused on settling in. Our care teams take the time to learn preferences, routines, and personal history, so each resident feels known. Families are included in that process, with open communication and partnership.

With the right support in place, everyday life can continue with familiarity and reassurance.

This Family Day, we’re celebrating all of the families that make up our Park Place community: our Residents and their loved ones, friends who feel like family, and the teams who care for our Residents with warmth and respect each day.

These relationships shape our community and help everyone feel supported and connected, every day.

As a family-owned business, family has always been at the heart of everything we do.

Happy Family Day from our family to yours!

We are pleased to share that Brent Hoag, husband of one of our residents, has created a special song dedicated to all Clayton Heights employees.
This is what Brent had to say about why he created and shared the song:
"Every now and then in life we have an opportunity to remind our fellow human beings who are routinely making positive contributions to others who are less fortunate, or challenged/disadvantaged, just how meaningful & appreciated they are.
The overall staff at Clayton Heights Community Care exemplify such a compassionate & caring group of people, as a role model, on a daily & ongoing basis.
To recognize them & to remind them, in this regard, is an honor. Otherwise, they might unfortunately never fully realize just how important they are & more specifically the significant impact of how they are actually treating & caring for others, or simply stated "doing their jobs", is having on people like my wife Sally (who is sadly completely dependent in the final stage of Alzheimer's) & myself.
Sure, they can hear this from those in charge & from their employer, which they should be, however the deserving employees after a while can unfortunately almost expect this from those in charge as being part of their responsibilities & duties. As such, it is sadly almost dismissed by such valued employees & we risk their understandably and typically slipping into complacency , or worse yet, "being taken for granted".
And that is where the opportunity presents itself for common people like myself to openly & clearly step up to emphasize to the staff team at Clayton Heights Care Community (Long Term Care) just how much they are appreciated primarily because of their compassion, empathy, professionalism, winning attitudes, and work ethic. I can't thank them enough or do justice to the difference that they are making on a daily basis in the lives of people such as Sally, along with so many unnamed others."

Our final Sunflower Showdown post is here!

We’re so proud of all the hard work our residents put into making this such a truly special experience. From watering the sunflowers every chance they got, to creating beautiful sunflower-themed crafts to display throughout the home, their dedication made August a month to remember.

Some of our sunflowers grew tall and strong, and just like them, our community bloomed together.

Our Sunflower Showdown has come to an end!

For the big finale, our residents have been practicing a very special song and they can’t wait to share it with you.

This journey has been all about growth, joy, and community. Thank you for cheering them on as we planted seeds, nurtured them, and celebrated every little bloom along the way.
