✨ It's DAY FOUR of our Holiday Gift Guide Series! ✨

We're dedicating this week to sharing physio-approved gifts for kiddos of ALL age groups, and we're almost done! So far, we've covered babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, and today we're sharing our favourite gifts for GRADESCHOOLERS (5 years+)! πŸ›΄

🎁 The Ogodisk Max Set is an excellent choice for kiddos working on hand-eye coordination to improve their ball-handling skills in sports. The large target allows for success and guaranteed fun!

🎁 Scooters are a gradeschooler classic! They're great for building strength, balance, coordination, and power for tasks like running and jumping. Have your kiddo practice by riding up and down the driveway or sidewalk or by maneuvering around their toys in an obstacle course.

🎁 The Hopscotch Ring Set is fantastic for gross motor development, motor planning, and coordination. It can be used in a hopscotch course, combining both single and double-leg hopping patterns to build lower extremity strength and power.

Stay tuned for the LAST post from our Holiday Gift Guide Series which will be on PRETEENS & TEENS! ⚽

✨ It's DAY THREE of our Holiday Gift Guide Series! ✨

We're dedicating this week to sharing physio-approved gifts for kiddos of ALL age groups. So far, we've covered babies and toddlers, and today we're sharing our favourite gifts for PRESCHOOLERS (3-5 years)! 🧸

🎁 Sensory balls are a fantastic choice for helping to encourage catching, bouncing, throwing, and kicking! We love to use them around the clinics because they are brightly colored and softly textured, making them appealing to young kids and safe for play.

🎁 Board games like the Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game can support the development of fine motor skills, such as grasping, grip strength, and hand-eye coordination. Even better if they can use it while in a squat, kneeling, or tummy position to add some full-body strengthening while playing!

🎁 Target boards offer great ways for kids to develop their throwing skills - they can work on their aim, accuracy, and speed when throwing, all while having fun! Target boards come in all shapes and sizes, but we love ones that stick and have different point values.

✨ It's DAY TWO of our Holiday Gift Guide Series! ✨

We’re dedicating every weekday this week to sharing physio-approved gifts for kiddos of ALL age groups. We started with BABIES yesterday, and today we're sharing our favourite gifts for TODDLERS (1-3 years)! πŸ‘Ά

🎁 Strider Bikes are a great option to start your kiddo on the path towards biking. It works on leg strength core stability, balance, coordination, and motor planning. With practice, your toddler will be zipping around the playground in no time!

🎁 Puzzles can help work on fine motor skills, visual skills, and transitions between activities! Our therapists use puzzles that range in difficulty, both to engage and challenge!

🎁 Bowling Pins are a great tool for practicing ball skills! From rolling to throwing underhands to kicking a ball to emerging into toddlerhood, they're fantastic for problem solving and motor planning skills.

✨ β€˜Tis the season for our Physio-Approved Holiday Gift Guide! ✨

First up on our gift guide series is BABIES (0-12 months)! 🍼

🎁 O-balls / rattles are great for encouraging babies to reach while playing on their back and tummy, and prep them for grasping.

🎁 Walkers are a fun toy for getting kiddos to move their feet and can be used as a surface to transition to/from. A big component of learning to walk is balancing and shifting weight from one leg to another - reaching from a walker to another surface is a great way to encourage this as it's a perfect height for babies.

🎁 Squigz are one of our favourite toys to use in our clinics for many reasons! These bright and colourful toys can stick to various flat surfaces and are a toy that will grow with your child. They can be used to chew on (bigger ones), encourage reaching, promote grip strength, fine motor skills, and more!

Are you noticing your baby is now staying more upright while sitting 🧘, and using their hands βœ‹to play with different toys?

This demonstrates trunk stability! Which means they are not needing their hands for support anymore in the sitting position πŸŽ‰

After babies have developed more strength and maturity in their postural control in static (still) sitting, they are ready to move on to challenging and practicing their dynamic balance - maintaining their sitting balance while moving in and out of their base of support!! 🀩

One way to build the skill of dynamic sitting balance is to place toys/objects βšΎπŸ¦– in front of your baby. We recommend small and simple things that can be easily picked up! This encourages reaching, picking up the toy and then playing using both hands - which are now off the support surface!

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which honours the lost children and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. It’s a day to reflect on the learning and unlearning we are doing individually and as a community, and a day to look forward to the many actions we must continue to take to contribute to the reconciliation process.

We invite you to join us in taking the time on this day β€” and every day β€” to acknowledge and better understand the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of the residential school system. As a non-Indigenous organization and settlers on this land, we are committed to listening and learning about the truth. This recognition and commemoration is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Tandem balance is a fancy word for balancing with your feet πŸ‘£ along a line!

Working on balance is super important for children to stay strong on their feet during everyday fun activities, especially at school! Between running around, playing with friends, going to the park, or playing sports, it's important for them to have great balance to engage in play!

Start by standing still on the spot with one foot in front of the other, and walk in a straight line by placing the other foot in front! It is harder than it looks, so don't be afraid to keep your arms out to help! 🀸

To make tandem balancing fun at KPG, we like to incorporate it into obstacle courses for children to cross - especially in the game "floor is lava" πŸŒ‹! We challenge them to safely reach the other side (while doing their exercises) without falling into the hot lava!!

If you have any concerns about your child and their ability to balance themselves, or any other type of development concerns, book an assessment today at kidsphysio.ca/BOOK
