Let’s talk about Shockwave Therapy.
Put simply, shockwave utilizes shockwaves to induce tissue repair.
Realistically, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Shockwave is a treatment involving high energy short wavelength sound waves (aka shockwaves) to treat tendons, periosteum (pain sensitive tissue surrounding the bone), and bone. Research has demonstrated the benefit of Shockwave on bone and tendon regeneration, blood vessel growth (neovascularization for all you fellow nerds out there), and a decrease in pain and sensitivity secondary to chemical influence on pain receptors.
A variety of both acute and chronic conditions can benefit from Shockwave Therapy. Listed above are some that are commonly treated and also backed by research. It’s important to remember that research is always changing and updating so if you are suffering from something not listed feel free to reach out and we can talk about whether or not Shockwave is a good fit for you.
In order to see the benefits of Shockwave therapy as a patient it’s important to understand that it is required to have 3 treatments *minimum*. Shockwave visits occur 1 week apart to give tissue time to begin healing. Luckily, we can render other treatments in the interim and encourage you to be active in your rehab programming while your cells do their job at the source. Tissue repair occurs on a cellular level, therefore research demonstrates that it will take 3 months for long term effects to be seen in chronic tendinopathies.
