Sensitive Teeth in Winter: Tips for Cold Weather Comfort
Does that first breath of crisp winter air make you wince? Do hot coffee or icy winds trigger sharp pain in your teeth? You’re not alone! Winter tooth sensitivity is a common complaint in our chilly
Lower Mainland winters.
Why does it happen now?
Cold air causes the fluid in tiny dentin tubules (microscopic channels in your teeth) to contract rapidly, stimulating nerves and creating that stabbing pain. Common causes also include tooth decay creating cavities, gum recession exposing the sensitive tooth roots, and erosion from frequent consumption of sugary and acidic foods or drinks. Furthermore, if you grind your teeth (bruxism), this can wear down your enamel, exacerbating the pain.
Simple ways to minimize winter sensitivity:
🦷 Switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush and desensitizing toothpaste (look for potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride)
🦷 Avoid very hot or cold foods/drinks back-to-back
🦷 Use a mouthguard if you grind at night
🦷 Rinse with warm salt water and stay hydrated
🦷 Limit acidic foods like citrus and wine
At My Dentist at Morgan Creek in South Surrey / White Rock, our caring family dentists offer fast, effective relief: professional desensitizing treatments, fluoride varnishes, custom night guards, and gentle gum care to protect exposed roots.
