Happy Monday from our Cloverdale optometry team! 🌲 Although Surrey’s temperatures are a relatively mild 4–11°C this week, those chilly, in-between winter days can still dry out your eyes and make screen time more tiring.
Here are some simple tips to keep your eyes comfortable:
* 💧 Stay Hydrated & Humidified – Cold air and indoor heating can zap moisture from your eyes. Run a humidifier at home or work and sip plenty of water. If your eyes feel gritty, use lubricating (preservative-free) drops for extra moisture .
* 🖥️ Give Your Eyes a Break – With shorter days, we spend more time indoors on devices. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. And remember to blink often – studies show we blink up to 60% less when staring at screens, which can dry out eyes. Adjust your monitor to eye level and dim harsh overhead lights to reduce strain.
* 😎 Protect Against Glare – Winter sun sits low in the sky and even a mild sunny day can be bright. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses (polarized lenses help with glare) whenever you’re outside. A brimmed hat can also shield your eyes from wind and glare on crisp days.
If you notice persistent dryness, blurry vision, or discomfort, it might be time for an eye exam.
